Maria Scrimenti is a Certified Counselor & Coach specializing in "emotional eating", binge eating, and chronic dieting. She supports her clients in living happier, healthier lives by helping them create balance with food, establish sustainable self- care practices, and craft a positive body image. After having struggled with disordered eating and body dysmorphia herself, Maria is passionate about helping women make peace with food and their bodies so they can have the confidence and energy they need to live the life they want. If you’re constantly worrying about your body and fearing weight gain, that’s a sign that your mental health could use support.

If you’re always thinking about what you’re eating and not eating, that’s a sign that your relationship with food would benefit from healing.

A healthy relationship with your body is rooted in peace.

The clients who come to me thinking they aren’t taking good care of themselves because they’ve fallen off their diet again & don’t exercise regularly are the very same clients who are showering daily, going to therapy, volunteering, spending time with their families, pursuing growth & learning, getting a yearly physical, watching shows they love, journaling, reading books, cuddling with their pets, engaging in hobbies, and doing other things that count as wellness and align with their values.

Diet and exercise are just two small pieces of the wellness pie.

How does it feel to read this?

My hope is that it gives you permission to release some of the pressure you put on yourself to do things the way diet culture says you need to do them.

You are allowed to write your own definition of self-care, and craft your own definition of health & wellness, so that however you choose to spend your time, it feels fulfilling and worthwhile.

And no, it’s not because “it only works if you work it”.

If you keep falling off various lifestyle changes or weight loss plans, it’s not because you’re a failure and lack discipline.

It’s because the programs are unsustainable by design.

Our bodies & brains fight back until we can’t take it anymore and we’re eating off plan or bingeing.

This isn’t because you’re weak, it’s because you’re human.

I have to call this one like I see it. Noom is a predatory liar.

Noom claims to address the psychology of eating, positing that the reason you haven’t been able to lose the weight and keep it off and the reason you haven’t been able to gain control over your relationship with food is because of your psychology.

What they’re not acknowledging is that any diet- including the one they put you on at noom- will make you feel crazy around food, will CAUSE loss- of- control eating, and will CAUSE long-term weight gain.

If you haven’t been able to lose the weight and keep it off or if you feel out of control around food, this is not your fault.

While companies like Noom try to gaslight the consumer and make you believe the problem is YOU and they’ll help you fix YOU, the truth is the problem is them.

They make you feel like your body is a problem to be fixed, then provide a “solution” that only exacerbates the problem, then make you feel like it’s all your fault if it doesn’t work for you.

Let 2024 be the year you opt out of this madness.

You deserve peace in your body and peace around food. You deserve confidence in yourself.

Happy holidays 🎄❤️

Words can’t describe how thankful I am for Intuitive Eating this holiday season.

Being an Intuitive Eater at Christmas means peace around all the holiday food. No stress around the treats.

Eating intuitively means I can have cookies if I want them… I don’t hold myself back until I can’t take it anymore & then I binge. I can enjoy them calmly and move on without guilt.

And the funny thing is, with this mindset, the treats lose their allure. They’re still wonderful, but I don’t feel tortured by wondering if I should or shouldn’t eat them.

Eating intuitively means I have agency over my body & my food choices, so I’m not agonizing over foods that aren’t “allowed”.

Do you realize what an incredible gift this is?

To be able to just be present with my family without worrying about food, my weight, and my body… it’s a dream come true. Thank you & for changing my life and so many others.

Food freedom is possible for you, too. No matter what your history is with food, you can have peace… you deserve peace.

Your body is not something to be embarrassed of.

Your body has carried you through every experience you’ve ever had.

It’s been there for every milestone, every heartbreak... every memory you’ve ever made- good or bad- you’ve made inside your body.

It’s the most intimate relationship you’ll ever have.

And yet...

we think the worst things about our bodies.

We think no one will love us like this.

We think everyone else must be appalled.

We think we deserve to feel bad, because how could we let ourselves go like this?

But what if that was not the truth?

What if the truth was, you haven’t “let yourself go”?

What if the truth was you deserve a rich and full life... CAN LIVE a rich and full life in THIS body?

Don’t ever let anyone make you feel shame over your body- yourself included.

I totally love this time of year when clients are struck by the differences they notice compared to years past.

This client, whose message is pictured here, used to STRESS being around so many tempting holiday foods. It was torture, wanting to be able to just enjoy everything but knowing she “shouldn’t”, then feeling guilty when she inevitably binged.

This year, all of that is behind her.

This year, she can be around candy and cinnamon rolls and sweets and it is so NOT a big deal! She knows she can have these things if she wants them, but doesn’t feel the need to binge. She can enjoy them without stress and without guilt, in a way that feels good to her, and move on.

This is food freedom!

If being around holiday treats causes you anxiety, know that it doesn’t have to be this way.

Diet culture loves to tell us that food = calories that sustain life or macros that build muscle & burn fat, and if we use food for anything other than that, we’re doing it wrong.

This perspective on food is harmful and denies our humanness.

Food is a way to connect with others. It’s a vehicle for a pleasurable & emotional experience. It holds memories, helps us celebrate and embrace our culture, and allows us to honor tradition.

Yet diet culture makes us feel shame if we eat for anything other than weight loss, weight maintenance, or muscle building.

Especially during the holiday season, you do not need to feel guilty for using food for more than just fuel.

You deserve for eating to be a rich & joyful experience.
