Black and African American older adults are nearly 2x more likely to develop disease and related than their White counterparts. While researchers do not fully understand why, cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, which are more prevalent among Black and African American individuals could contribute to this increased risk.

On a recent episode of the North Nashville TV's “Let’s Talk About It,” VMAC Nurse Practitioner Dr. Ray Romano discussed cardiovascular risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of proactively managing them. Listen to the full interview 👉

We are proud to share that two of our outstanding faculty members, Assistant Professors of Medicine Dr. Leslie Gaynor and Dr. Monica Santisteban, have recently received research grants from the ’s Association!

Dr. Gaynor will work to characterize a non-Alzheimer’s form of dementia known as “limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathological change", or LATE-NC.

Dr. Santisteban will investigate the impact of arterial stiffening on cerebrovascular and cognitive function. Her research aims to better understand how vascular problems contribute to cognitive decline and identify new treatment targets to protect the brain from these effects.

Women are more likely than men to develop and related dementias later in life. This is partly due to biological differences and because women tend to live longer — the rest can be attributed to structural inequalities.

With her K01 award, Dr. Lucie Kalousová will examine the implications of women's labor force disadvantage on cognitive outcomes later in life. Her research could help us better understand the complexities around s*x and gender differences in and .

A recent study conducted by researchers including Professor of Neurology Dr. Timothy J. Hohman found a maternal history of memory impairment could help identify adults at risk for disease. These findings could help predict the chances of Alzheimer's-related brain changes in adults before symptoms begin, leading to early detection and potentially prevention. Designed for individuals in the early stages of the disease, the latest drug, donanemab (Kisunla) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Here is what you should know:

-Like lecanemab (Leqembi), donanemab contains antibodies that target amyloid plaques in the brain
-Donanemab will be covered for patients with Medicare Part B, paying a 20% coinsurance after the deductible is met
-Phase III clinical trial results found donanemab slowed cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s by 35%
-Unlike lecanemab, individuals are not required to continue taking donanemab once it has cleared the protein amyloid from the brain
