“How often do you get stung?”

That’s the number one ☝️ question people ask me.

The answer…more than I like!

But probably less than I deserve 🤣

Honey bees are generally docile. When I get stung it’s usually because I’m in a rush and it almost always starts off as a conversation in my head of “Well I’ll just do this one thing really quick.” Nope.

Bees don’t really appreciate when you try to do things on your terms and not theirs 😂

An example of this is opening your hives late. Like I did Monday night. I got to one of the apiaries later than intended and made the move to open the hives anyway. Oh, sweet stinging reminder.

Two guard bees rushed over to defend their hive from the intruder …lol it’s me.

If you’re opening your hives too late you’re putting yourself at a greater risk to get stung. Why? Because all the bees have returned from foraging and it’s a full house!

I got stung on my ring finger and my ankle. Luckily I was able to get my wedding ring off before my hand 🖐 became completely swollen. A swift reminder to respect the nature of the hives.

☝️ Always remember to completely remove the stinger and wash the wound. Always scrape and never pull the stinger out - as the venom sac will pump more venom into your body. 🐍

And slow down, the bees and your body will thank you 🐝

Check out this adorable leaf cutter bee 😍

This is a native bee ☝️

Did you know there are over 20,000 known species of bees in the world and around 4,000 are native to the United States?

Native bees are very important pollinators!

This week the temps will reach 100 in Nashville. One way to help our pollinators is to set out water for them. Make sure to add sticks, rocks, marbles, etc so they can have a little landing pad to cool off (and not drown!)

Did you know yesterday was World Bee Day?

May 20th was declared World Bee Day by the United Nations to increase awareness about the importance of pollinators.

In celebration, myself, worker bees and a handful of drones headed over to the farmer’s market on a field trip.

I loved watching everyone’s faces as they did a double-take when they saw the bees buzzing along making honey. Adults and children all had the same expression of fascination & wonder.

I heard so many stories about the colorful ways bees had been a part of different people’s lives and what it meant to them. I just love bees ❤️

Thank you to everyone who came out to last night ❤️🐝

When you forget to come back and add those frames 🤣 These girls are working fast!

I use wax foundation frames that give the bees some nice structure. Foundation-less frames are also frequently used by beekeepers.

If left frameless, however, the bees will build as they wish! Which isn’t a great option when trying to inspect a hive.

I cut the comb off that was stuck to the inner cover and used rubber bands to add the comb into frames and return them to the hive. 👌

Can you spot the honey bee frantically dancing from side to side? 🌿

She’s just returned from foraging and she wants to tell her sisters how to go collect more of what she’s just found- without taking them there herself. 🚗

She’ll need to draw them… a map!

She does this with dance, the waggle dance. She’ll move in a figure 8, giving them directions based on…the SUN! ☀️

Honey bees can see ultraviolet light - which shines through the clouds, even on overcast days. Think of the sun, as their Solar Compass. ⛅️

The orientation of the dance communicates which angle 📐 to travel away from the sun & the duration of the dance communicates the distance away from the hive. 🐝

Honey bees collect nectar, pollen, water & propolis. This time of year in Tennessee they’re bringing in a ton of new pollen, as they patiently await for nectar to become available.

Happy first day of spring! The wait is almost over 🌻

It’s here! It’s here!!!

The FIRST FULL HIVE INSPECTION of 2022!!

Pictured here: Me + Several thousand healthy & vibrant honey bees.

Not pictured here: My little heart bursting with joy that these hives made it through winter AND are SO STRONG!

Full disclosure, I did lose one hive late Fall to varroa mites + deformed wing virus.

I can tell you that I will most likely learn MORE from that loss than from the success of my other hives.

Losses will always be a part of beekeeping, and we’ll count them.

But don’t forget to count your wins my friends!
