Can you spot the honey bee frantically dancing from side to side? 🌿
She’s just returned from foraging and she wants to tell her sisters how to go collect more of what she’s just found- without taking them there herself. 🚗
She’ll need to draw them… a map!
She does this with dance, the waggle dance. She’ll move in a figure 8, giving them directions based on…the SUN! ☀️
Honey bees can see ultraviolet light - which shines through the clouds, even on overcast days. Think of the sun, as their Solar Compass. ⛅️
The orientation of the dance communicates which angle 📐 to travel away from the sun & the duration of the dance communicates the distance away from the hive. 🐝
Honey bees collect nectar, pollen, water & propolis. This time of year in Tennessee they’re bringing in a ton of new pollen, as they patiently await for nectar to become available.
Happy first day of spring! The wait is almost over 🌻
