Dear Patient,

I love when I’m removing someone’s needles and they tell me about a great insight they had during their treatment. An idea for a book. A solution to a problem. An epiphany. But it’s not really the acupuncture that does this.

The needles invite you to step through the veil that separates your everyday existence from your inner realm. When you’re sitting in the chair, relaxed and comfortable, with nothing to do, there are many places you can go. The needles are in their spots and qi is buzzing through your meridians. Where will your inner journey take you?

It’s good to give ourselves the psychic space to wander. We may discover a hidden oasis, or get blissfully lost in a forest, or unearth buried treasure. We can untangle a knot, or follow a thread, or simply let it all go. But only if we take time to retreat from the ever-present demands on our conscious attention, and allow ourselves to journey into the unknown.

Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist

šŸ„— Eating in harmony with the season is a key TCM principle. In late summer, nourish your Earth element (Spleen & Stomach) with grounding, mildly sweet foods.

Here are some of our favorites for this season:

šŸ  Sweet potatoes & root veggies
šŸŽƒ Squash & zucchini
🌾 Millet, oats, and rice
🄬 Chickpeas, lentils, and peas
šŸ‘ Peaches, pears, and figs

Warm, lightly cooked meals support digestion better than raw or cold foods this time of year.

In TCM, late summer is more than a season—it’s the foundation for autumn health.

By strengthening your Earth element now, you support digestion, calm worry, and prepare your body for the dry, crisp energy of fall.

Think of it as tending the soil before planting the next crop—the more you nourish now, the more balanced you’ll feel moving forward. šŸŒ¾šŸ‚

Acupuncture is one of the best ways to support your body during this seasonal transition. Schedule your treatment today!

Continuing with our breakdown of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s season of ā€œlate summerā€, we’re diving deeper into the Earth element.

In TCM, each element corresponds with an emotion. And for the Earth element, it’s worry and overthinking.

Just as late summer’s humidity feels heavy in the air, our minds can also feel weighed down—spinning with thoughts, stuck in over-analysis, or craving stability.

How can acupuncture help us during this time? Acupuncture can strengthen the Earth element! It helps calm the mind, ease overthinking: leaving you clearer, lighter, and more resilient.

🌿 Did you know Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes five seasons, not four?

The ā€œextraā€ one is late summer—a few weeks between summer and fall. In TCM, this is the season of the Earth element represented by the Spleen and Stomach, which govern digestion and nourishment.

This transitional time can leave us feeling heavy, sluggish, or prone to digestive issues.

When we support our Earth element, we feel grounded, centered, and ready for autumn. šŸ‚

šŸ‘‰ Stay tuned this week as we share late summer health tips + seasonal foods to support your body and mind.

Dear Patient,

ā€œThis takes time,ā€ I’ll say to a patient.

Usually it’s a reassurance when things aren’t progressing as quickly as they’d like. An injury is slow to heal. Another month passes with no pregnancy. An illness lingers.

So I tell people that acupuncture is slow medicine.

Sometimes the opposite happens—acupuncture works much more quickly than expected. Pain relief is immediate. An uninterrupted eight hours of sleep after one treatment. Change can be startlingly swift.
But what is time to the body?

Time simply a measure of our expectations. I expect my first patient of the day to show up at 9AM, because that’s when I’ll be ready for them. You expect a meeting to last an hour, because you’ve planned to do something else afterwards. We expect some or another life accomplishment after a number of years on earth, because, well, we just expect that.

But the body has no such expectations, no internal timekeeper charting our progress.

The body has no Google calendar or productivity apps. The body mends, repairs, balances and adjusts outside of time.
Our schedules and plans matter not to the body. Healing unfolds as it will, and we are wise to surrender to its mysterious agenda.

Love and gratitude,
Your Acupuncturist

Our Story

Our founder, Alexa Hulsey, started her acupuncture practice like most do – with a traditional private room clinic. However, she quickly became frustrated that her friends couldn’t afford her prices or get treated as often as they needed. That’s why Alexa opened Encircle Acupuncture (formerly East Nashville Community Acupuncture) as a community acupuncture clinic. Treating patients in a community setting on a sliding payment scale allows us to keep acupuncture affordable and accessible to everyone. Since opening our first location in East Nashville in January 2010, we have served thousands of patients throughout middle Tennessee. We have since grown to two locations - East Nashville and Bellevue - and have seven licensed acupuncturists on staff. We are Nashville’s oldest and largest community acupuncture clinic!
