Should you start a business?

As you guys probably know, being an entrepreneur isn’t for the faint of heart. Honestly, it requires grit, tough skin, and persistence like nothing else I’ve ever done!

If you’re thinking about starting a business, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before emailing an account to get your LLC.

1. What do you imagine for your future, and how does this business fit in?
2. Are you passionate enough about this business that you’d be excited to wake up and do it every day for the next 5-10 years at minimum?
3. Are you willing to do the hard work even on the hard days, through bad decisions and failed expectations?

If you have any doubt about any of these questions, sleep on it, my friend.

I recently read a study by Harvard Business School that on average, men will apply for a job they feel they are 60% qualified for, because they know they can make up the other 40% on the job. Women, on the other hand, tend to only apply for ones they feel 100% qualified for—assuming they have to be PERFECT before even applying. Friends, I’m with the guys here.

I first joined team J* with smaller projects in October, which turned into larger responsibilities by January, and on regular retainer in April. In the beginning I was nervous, not confident in my abilities, and constantly wondered what I did to somehow end up here. I made mistakes, was given grace, got back up and kept going.

Now, I’m in Phoenix, AZ with the rest of her content+marketing team, and all I can do is thank this wicked smart, incredibly kind, and hard working gal for seeing something in me, believing I can do the dang thing, and welcoming me into her business when I *literally* had no idea what I was doing. If you’ve ever baked bread, you know that it takes a lot of time and a lot of patience.

And you know what? Sometimes after 4+ hours of work, it still doesn’t come out “right.” The yeast is bad and the bread won’t rise, it’s a weird shape, or it’s not baked all the way through.
🤦🏼‍♀️
Why do I do it then? Well, I bake for one simple reason: mindfulness.

Baking bread requires my full attention: kneading the dough, waiting while it rises, and following the directions step-by-step.

I feel my stress melt away with each whisk of the eggs, and with every measurement, beat, and fold.
🥖
I feel productive when I bake, it’s therapeutic, and it allows me to be creative.
👩🏼‍🍳
Baking is a skill that can be honed but never truly mastered, and I love that it is a meditative experience for me. Plus, at the end I have a tangible reward for my work that I can share with others to make them happy!

Listen, I get it. I know you because I was you. I was the exact same way! I didn't know what to charge, I was too scared to price myself, and I completed undervalued my services. Over the past 2 months I have had the pleasure of working with clients from literally all over the world (shoutout to Wild Lavender Studio in Singapore 😉) and loved every minute of it. Of course I love that my clients keep me in business and that they recommend me to their friends and families, but what I love the very most about them is that they are the most interesting, artistic, creative girl bosses. 😍 Cheers to my clients, both present and future... I hope you’re one of them soon! 🥂

I have been organized for as long as I can remember.

In elementary school, I was the girl with my crayons arranged in rainbow order on my desk. I remember in middle school, I cleaned out my friend’s “cubbies” so they wouldn’t get in trouble during cleaning inspections. And I was assigned to keep track of hundreds of choral robes for my high school chorus. (Gee, I wonder why!)

So it only made sense that I started a business that utilized my finely honed organizational skills. I’ve been preparing for this my whole life!
