We had our 4 month post op appointment today and Merrick’s team is very pleased with his head. It is healing well! We will visit neurosurgery and plastic surgery on his “cranioversary” in September.
I had to get a picture of Merrick and his plastic surgeon, Dr. Golinko. Dr. Golinko is truly amazing and we are so blessed to have Merrick in such great hands. 💜

Cranial vault reconstruction has not slowed down this strong boy at all!! His last sutures fell off last week 🙌 He is army crawling all over the place and trying to pull up. He is a happy boy and we are beyond blessed for Merrick and his good health. Thank you everyone for your continued thoughts and prayers!

Merrick is HOME!!

We were discharged this afternoon! The surgeons were very pleased with Merrick’s recovery. We will follow up with plastic surgery in a week to see how Merrick’s incision looks. Merrick will wear his head dressing for 2 weeks, and we will have to change it daily. The plates in his head are thin and pliable, so Merrick has to take it easy for a while as his bones grow. Over time, these plates will dissolve and be replaced with hard bone. Merrick will be followed by neurosurgery and plastic surgery until he is 18 to ensure his head is in good shape.

We had the BEST care at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Thank you everyone for all the love, support, and prayers. It helps so much, and we are so grateful. God is good!

Our little warrior is out of the PICU, and we are now in a regular room!

Merrick had some nausea this morning, but it’s improving and being treated with Zofran. He is still experiencing quite a bit of pain and soreness as well, but the medical team has his pain under control with Tylenol and morphine. As expected, his face is swollen, and his eyes are bruised. Currently, he is not able to open his eyes due to the swelling. The swelling and bruising should get better over the next day or so, though. We have been playing music for him, which seems to help him relax. The current plan is to remove his head dressing tomorrow and continue to keep him comfortable until we are ready for discharge.

Thank you everyone for your sweet messages and prayers. It helps us so much, and we are thankful we have an amazing community caring for Merrick! 💜🫶

SURGERY UPDATE:

Merrick is out of the OR and recovery and is now in PICU! 🙌

We spoke with Dr. Golinko after he finished the procedure, and he said Merrick did great. Dr. Golinko reset the saggital and bilateral lambdoid sutures to give Merrick more width and depth to his skull. He also mentioned that Merrick had some large veins in the back of his head and that there was noticeable pressure there. We will be staying the night in PICU for monitoring and will be transferred to a normal room tomorrow assuming the recovery goes well.

Praise the Lord! Thank you God for watching over our sweet, strong boy. 🙏💜💙

SURGERY UPDATE:

We arrived to Vanderbilt Children’s hospital this morning around 5:00 AM, and the surgery team took Merrick back to the OR at 7:15 AM. The surgery team spent roughly an hour sedating Merrick with general anesthesia, and Dr. Bonfield and Dr. Golinko started the procedure at 8:25 AM. Merrick is doing great, and his vitals are in great shape. Before the surgery, he was happy and ready to go!

Thank you everyone for the love and prayers. Please continue to pray for our strong boy!

When Merrick was born, we noticed the back of his head formed a point. While we were still in the hospital following delivery, we asked the pediatricians what they thought about this point, and we were told it is normal and that it could be attributed to how the growth plates meet. Most of the time, as the head grows, the skull rounds out, but at Merrick's 4-month pediatrician appointment, our pediatrician referred us to a neurosurgeon as the point should have been gone by that time. On July 5th, Merrick underwent X-ray and CT scans and met with Vanderbilt Children's neurosurgery and plastic surgery where he was diagnosed with multiple suture craniosynostosis at 5 months old.

Craniosynostosis is the premature closure of the skull, or the sutures of the skull. In Merrick's case, he has a particularly rare type of craniosynostosis which involves the fusion of the sagittal suture and both lambdoid sutures of his skull. When seen on a CT scan, the fusion of these three sutures forms a three point star identical to the Mercedes Benz symbol, hence the name Mercedes Benz Craniosynostosis. If left untreated, craniosynostosis can cause a host of long term effects including headaches, seizures, cognitive impairment, or blindness to name a few, but Merrick will be undergoing Cranial Vault Reconstruction (CVR) surgery at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt on the morning of September 5th to address his multiple suture craniosynostosis and avoid these long term effects. CVR surgery involves the separation and resetting of the fused growth plates of the skull to allow sufficient room for the brain to grow and develop normally. This surgery will last 4 - 5 hours. Following the surgery, Merrick will stay the night in ICU and then be transferred to a normal hospital room assuming his recovery goes well. Our neurosurgeon, Dr. Bonfield, and our plastic surgeon, Dr. Golinko, will both be performing the surgery as a joint case. Our experience with Vanderbilt Children's neurosurgery and plastic surgery has been fantastic, and we are incredibly lucky to be so close to such a great facility and doctors. They have answered all of our questions and have been very informative and thorough with their diagnosis and information on the condition and surgery.

I am creating this page to bring more awareness to Mercedes Benz Craniosynostosis and to keep our family and friends updated on Merrick's journey. It has been a difficult two months waiting for this procedure to take place and learning everything we can about this diagnosis. The best thing that has helped us has been talking to other people who have experienced this same condition and hearing the details of their experience. We hate that Merrick has to experience this, especially at such a young age, but we are thankful it can be addressed. Merrick is the happiest little boy, and he is healthy as can be other than this one item. Please keep Merrick and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this journey together.
