After a modest expansion in 1957, the first major remodeling project at Story County Hospital began with a groundbreaking in 1968. Local business and civic leader Harold Fawcett (left) was among those who turned over the dirt at a ceremony kicking off the project.

When complete, the expansion added 35 beds and more than 2,000 square feet of space to the original hospital.

In the early 1960s, Story County Hospital nurses—pictured here on the left— helped staff local vaccination clinics across Nevada as the oral polio vaccine was introduced. The effort focused on building herd immunity and stemmed from Iowa being ravaged by the disease in the 1950s.

Given on a sugar cube or in liquid form, the vaccine made it easier to protect more children, and many still remember getting Kool-Aid to wash it down!

Decades before PlayStations, TVs, and tablets were commonplace on Pediatric units, children in the hospital had to use their imagination to pass the time.

To help with that, hand puppets specially made by Mrs. Sherk were provided to Story County Hospital patients ages 12 and under. Approximately 100 were distributed beginning in the Fall of 1956.
