If you’ve ever received a compounded medication, you may have noticed a Beyond Use Date (BUD) on the label. The Beyond Use Date (BUD) is the date by which your medication should no longer be used. The BUD is determined using USP guidelines and considers factors like the ingredients used, how the medication is prepared, and how it’s stored. It represents the timeframe during which the medication is expected to maintain its quality and safety.

Why do compounded medications have BUDs?
✔ Unlike FDA-approved products, compounded medications typically don’t have extensive long-term stability studies. Therefore, BUDs are set using available data and conservative guidelines.
