Hi well the online counseling is going well, like the land office I started five years ago it has taken off so fast its hard to keep up with! That is a good thing right!? So anyway going to start making some time to answer frequently asked questions, the first one being; What theory is the basis for your counseling? Although I am a fan of many theories, if I had to pick my favorite I would say I prefer Alfred Adler’s approach. Adler believed every behavior has a message, a purposefulness, that how people act is not random. They may need help figuring out why they do what they do, but there is a reason, usually something related to the way the person sees the world, which is based on his or her experiences. If your life has been full of trauma, you are likely to perceive the world as a hostile place. Adlerian therapists believe strongly in the holistic nature of people. We like to say a person is like a tree, grown from seeds, branching out, shaped by the environment, not like machines that are a collection of parts. That is why one answer is usually inadequate to explain what is going on with someone, and it will take more than one approach to get a person back on track. Adlerians like to see folks develop a style of living that that is balanced physically, emotionally, spiritually, creatively and in their work or learning. When a person has this balance, it is so much easier to have healthy interactions with other people, like a romantic partner or a coworker. How you have learned to move through your day to day happened early in your development, as early as age five! Knowing this explains why folks get so stuck, luckily Adlerian therapists know that you are unique and creatively equipped to figure out how to have a meaningful life.
