We are thrilled to announce that Sugarcreek Fire & Rescue received the esteemed "Pediatric Clinical Save Award" from the Ohio EMS for Children State Partnership Program on Friday, March 6th, 2026. This prestigious award is presented annually to one fire/EMS agency and one hospital in the state of Ohio.

“Our winning EMS case involved a response team of 12 members who attended to a pediatric patient critically injured after being thrown from a horse. Upon arrival, crews found the patient unresponsive, exhibiting signs of profound shock, and promptly initiated resuscitation measures, including airway management utilizing Rapid Sequence Intubation, pelvic stabilization, and administration of prehospital blood products – a groundbreaking first for a pediatric patient receiving prehospital blood from a fire department. Through seamless coordination with Cleveland Clinic critical care transport, dispatch, and Akron Children’s trauma team, providers successfully stabilized the child for rapid air transfer to the hospital. Notably, one responding member selflessly volunteered to drive the family an hour to the hospital, ensuring they could be at their child’s bedside without delay. This remarkable case exemplifies extraordinary teamwork, innovation, and compassionate care delivered under challenging circumstances, ultimately providing the child's family with precious time with their loved one – time that would not have been possible without the team's tireless efforts.

O- blood donors were historically responsible for providing 100% of the Uncrossmatched blood for emergencies. The math does not work out.
The use of O+ fills a critical gap in ensuring widespread access to this lifesaving intervention. These practical guidelines provide a framework for prehospital agencies and hospitals to use.

There are misconceptions about whom we treat on the battlefield.
No, it is not just young, healthy men and women. Some of our worst mass casualty events involved large numbers of kids. We had to learn a lot very quickly.
*We can apply this knowledge when taking care of pediatric traumatic injuries at home.*
I see too many prehospital blood agencies hesitate or even restrict blood products in pediatric patients. We need to fix that issue.

RhD-mismatched transfusions in RhD-negative women can lead to alloimmunization and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) in future pregnancies.

As RhD-positive emergency-release blood is used more frequently in pediatric trauma, similar considerations may extend to RhD-negative girls.
