Books are finally opening back up for lessons!

All training facilities can teach you to groom, saddle, and ride. Wyen Equine Wellness teaches you how to put your horse first, building the kind of relationship that one usually only reads about. By specializing in wellness-focused learning, and building a real relationship between horse and rider, Christa works to help learners of all ages to develop their potential. Lessons and training are available onsite or in your own barn*. English, Western, and Liberty lessons available.

Coming later this fall - First aid clinic! As we all know, our equine veterinarians are spread thin and emergency care can be difficult. Help your vet help you by learning basic horse first aid. We will cover medical conditions, how to spot them, wound care, anatomy and physiology, appropriate vocabulary (because telling your vet that your horse has a stick sticking out of the backside of his leg isn’t terribly helpful!) and how to build a useful kit.

It's been a long hard journey for Mr. Biggie. When he came here 7 months ago he was considered crazy. Or so we were told by several people who knew him before. But he was not crazy ( they usually aren't) he was in pain. Improper care for a severe navicular had caused alot of damage. Standing was hard, walking was hard, just existing was hard. He would hide himself away in the back corner of his stall. Not wanting to be touched. Everything just hurt. I do not wish to place blame on past owners. This was simply a case of not knowing how to help. When a horse just becomes another number and another bill to someone they look for quick solution and when they doesn't work. They send them down the road. Seven long months. That's what it took to heal both physically and mentally. And he still has a long way to go. The navicular is a very difficult think to work with. When Biggie came he was in standard shoes and wedge pads putting him on the tips of his toes. Creating pressure in all the wrong places. His angles where so bad it had created damage and unnatural bone development around both the navicular and coffin bone. He was kept in a stall for 9 months to "heal" only to get worse. Due to the lack of movement and growing pain in his front feet he began to compensate in his back end. Just like people, horses will adjust their way of standing and walking to accommodate pain. This caused his stifle to become sore. So sore that even lifting them slightly can be rough. Since being in my care Biggie has seen the vet three separate times. He was put through thorough lameness exams and had many xrays taken. After the first exam his shoes were removed. We then put him on pain meds for some relief while we took the next several months to slowly and safely fix his angles on his feet. The vet had concerns of possible ligament and tendon damage. Allowing them to slowly relax back and realse tension. During this time we began to rehab his muscles and stifle. Lots of massage and CST work allowed us to realse body tension and pitched nerves. Bungees were added on days he could handle it and light hill work as well. But the most important thing we did to rehab this horse was to just let him be a horse. This was approved by the vet! Please let your horses go outside! Just being able to move helped him more than people would like to believe.
I write this post today in honor of Biggie hitting a major milestone. After his most recent vet visit he was finally approved to be reshoed in proper fitting navicular shoes! We are not at the finish line quite yet but both his team of vets and I are super happy with his progress! The next step is to address his stifles but they need time to readjust to his new way of moving. Hopefully I will be making another update in a month or two!
Remember to take your time! Fast results are not long lasting results! I am not against shoes or injections but they have a time and place. Make sure you have a team of people who specialize in what your horse needs! Biggie may get injections in his stifles but only if that's what his body needs. Are goal is for Biggie to live a pain free life. This boy is just ten years old. He has a long life ahead as long as people do right by him! There is an amazing team of people who have come to love this horse both in and out of this barn. I want to thank his family Mollie Hansen Lonnie Bilbrey and Violet Hazard for trusting me to help their boy! It has been an amazing journey for him!

Blue was almost euthanized

This is my sisters ottb Blue.
When he first came into our care he was not well, extreme behaviors that was not only dangerous to us but to himself. He was unmanageable and we knew he needed help.

Blue was seen by the vet so we knew it was pain related but trying to find a way to manage it was difficult.Traditional medicine wasn't enough, chiro was too much, couldn't handle a massage, regular bodywork was overwhelming. We were running out of options and we weren't sure what to do.

I stumbled across a page Nova Equine Renovations and showed my sister I told her I had a feeling that this was our answer. Grace came out and work on Blue. Afterwards the chaos he was dealing with finally started to settle. This was years ago and Blue is now not only living but he is thriving.

This is actually the story of what got me started. Finally a form of bodywork that was soothing to the horse and allowed deep long lasting healing. This is why I am truly passionate about what this work can do because it has quite literally saved lives.
