Women’s History Month Highlight:

Betty was born February 28,1931 to Dewitt and Julia Dobbs of Millville Indiana. She was the oldest of 7 and always helped with her siblings. Betty finished 8th grade and started her own family young, marrying her husband at 16 years old. She had two children and was a homemaker until they were adults. Then she started working at Henry County Hospital at 27 as a caregiver. Betty took pride in caring for the sick of all ages. She remembers being asked by the Director of Nursing to care for the most vulnerable babies. She states “ Nursing was my calling. I may not have gone along with all my patients thoughts and beliefs, bits I still loved and cared for them.
After 27 years at the hospital, Betty went back to school and got her GED at 52 years old. She moved onto home healthcare where she took care of people and their families until she was 87 years old. Many of the people she cared for were doctors, that she had worked for in the past. They knew that they could trust Betty with their lives.
Today Betty expresses how deeply she loved her job and all the people she had the honor of caring for. She is now a resident and still enjoys sitting with her peers to bring them comfort and company.

Help us celebrate our Executive Director, Courtney Childress during Long-Term Care Administrators Week!

After spending 15 years as a nurse in long-term care, I developed a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards that come with caring for an aging population. Working directly with residents allowed me to build meaningful relationships and advocate for their dignity, comfort and quality of life. However, my time at the bedside also gave me a clear view of systemic issues that can affect the delivery of care, staffing challenges, communication, gaps, and operational barriers that often impact both residents and caregivers.

These experiences inspired me to pursue a leadership role in long-term care administration. I realized that by moving into an administrative position, I could expand my impact beyond individual patient care and help shape the environment in which care is delivered. My goal is to create a culture where residents receive compassionate, high-quality care and where staff members feel supported, respected and empowered to perform at their best.

As a nurse, I learned the importance of advocacy, teamwork and accountability. These values continue to guide my leadership approach. I believe effective administrators must understand the realities of frontline caregiving while also focusing on strategic planning, regulatory compliance and quality improvement. My clinical background allows me to make decisions that prioritize resident well-being while supporting the professionals who provide daily care.

Courtney, we are thankful for you and everything you bring to the community. Thank you for all you do for our team and residents.

JoEllen was born March 30, 1944 to Carlton and Margaret Wagner in Indianapolis. Where she grew up with her sister Patricia. She went to School 62 in Indy and recalls playing school any chance she got. She always knew she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. She went to Indiana Central College, where she got her Bachelors and Masters degrees in teaching. After that, she taught kindergarten in Indianapolis for 10 years. Then moved to Newcastle to start a family, where she continued to teach at Wilbur Wright elementary for 35 years. One of her greatest memories is when she was in charge of the reading center for the entire school. She helped the second grade class put on a play. The children were very engaged and excited. JoEllen recalls the children’s passion for learning expand at times. It was hard, especially when her husband was sick. However, knowing that she made a difference in the lives of so many children kept her going. Today JoEllen is thankful for all the years she was able to teach and all of the children she met along the way.
