In April 2025, Taveuan was transferred to The Beacon at Skyline, a prison using a “human-centered” approach to corrections. The center offers greater educational and programming opportunities, as well as mental health and reentry preparation.
With no fences or gun towers, it looked to Taveuan like a rehab retreat. He soon learned that the facility wasn’t the only new thing on the property; the philosophy had also changed.
Built on compassion, this new way of reform redefines justice. You can’t punish a man into wholeness, Taveuan writes, but you can love him there. Tavean believes that when people treat you like a person, you choose to act like one.
