Is your horse drinking enough?

Water is the most important nutrient that a horse should receive. On average, a typical 1,100 lb horse drinks between 5-15 gallons of water every day. Many factors impact the amount of water that horse drinks, including temperature, exercise, forage type and electrolyte balance. Water loss through sweat, manure, urine, respiration, and digestion increase water consumption. Also, when the ambient temperature is above 85°F, a horse’s frequency and volume of water consumption will increase. Below 45°F, a horse’s water consumption may decrease.

However, if it is not palatable and clean, they won’t drink it. Be sure to scrub water buckets/troughs regularly to prevent buildup and try to keep it at the ideal temperature of 45-65°F. It is also beneficial to get your water tested to know what you are giving your horse.
