Every permanent makeup cover-up is truly a custom, case-by-case service. No two clients — and no two brows — are ever the same.
When performing a cover-up, I evaluate much more than just the existing pigment that needs to be gone over. I carefully consider the client’s skin type, skin condition, lifestyle, and sun exposure, all of which play a major role in how new pigment will heal and settle.
Many clients think that they're just getting a touch up when they're coming in from another artist. But really, what they're getting is a cover up, and it's far more complex than a touch up. You're going to a different artist using different techniques and likely different pigments.
It’s important to understand that a cover-up is not the same as correction or removal. During a cover-up, the existing pigment is not removed. Instead, new pigment is strategically layered and blended with the pigment already in the skin to create a more flattering, updated result.
This client previously had carbon-based tattoo ink, which had faded and blurred over time. Carbon pigments can sometimes be challenging because when there is too much carbon saturation, the skin may not accept additional pigment and removal becomes the only option before any new work can be performed.
Fortunately, this client’s brows were not oversaturated, so we were able to move forward with a cover-up. I first performed color modification to neutralize the cool blue-gray tones that had developed. From there, I created a soft powder brow base and then layered in delicate hair strokes.
The hair strokes were created using a nano machine technique (nanobrows) for crisp definition, along with additional manual SoftTap hair strokes to create a soft, blended effect.
I was initially cautious because the client has larger pores and slightly oily skin, which can sometimes make retaining hair strokes more difficult. However, her skin accepted the pigment beautifully, and the results are healing wonderfully.
Every permanent makeup cover-up requires careful planning, advanced technique, and an understanding that each client’s skin behaves differently. With the right approach, even challenging brows can be transformed into something soft, natural, and beautifully refreshed. 🌸
