Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Today is a great reminder that even the smallest moments of positivity can make a big difference. Whether it’s sharing a smile, checking in on a coworker, or taking a moment to care for your own well-being, a little kindness goes a long way.

At Silver Oaks, we’re lucky to have a team that supports one another and works every day to create a safe, compassionate environment for our patients and each other. 💚

Wishing everyone a day filled with good spirits, positivity, and maybe a little bit of green! 🍀

As we wrap up Patient Safety Awareness Week, we want to recognize a group whose work helps ensure our staff are prepared to support patients safely and compassionately every day.

Today’s spotlight is on our Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI) Instructors: Polo, Randi, and Nick.

CPI training plays a vital role in maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff. Through this program, team members learn how to recognize early signs of distress, use verbal de-escalation techniques, and respond to challenging situations in a way that prioritizes care, welfare, safety, and security for everyone involved.

Polo, Randi, and Nick dedicate their time to training and supporting staff across the hospital, helping ensure that our team has the skills and confidence needed to manage difficult situations calmly and effectively. Their leadership helps foster a culture where prevention, communication, and teamwork are always the first approach.

Throughout this week, we’ve highlighted team members from across departments who demonstrate how we Team Up for Patient Safety every day. From clinical care and environmental safety to communication and collaboration, patient safety is truly a shared responsibility.

As Patient Safety Awareness Week comes to a close, we want to thank every member of our Silver Oaks team for the role they play in creating a safe, supportive environment for our patients and for each other. 💚

Continuing with Patient Safety Awareness Week, today we are spotlighting John B., one of our Mental Health Technicians!

John supports patient safety by living out the principles of care, welfare, safety, and security. He works to create a calm and supportive environment by helping patients get a good night’s rest, de-escalating situations when needed, and ensuring the milieu remains safe by removing potentially harmful items from patient areas.

He also encourages patients to be active participants in their treatment by reminding them that recovery works best when they are honest with themselves and with the treatment team. John emphasizes the importance of practicing the coping skills they learn so they can continue using them successfully after leaving the program.

Looking ahead, John plans to continue strengthening collaboration by communicating with the care team about both positive and challenging patient interactions. Sharing these observations helps the team better understand patient progress and provide the most supportive care possible.

✨ “My favorite part about working at Silver Oaks is seeing when a patient truly gets it and begins to turn their behavior around. Sometimes they even start helping calm their peers the way staff once helped them. That gives me big smiles in my heart.”

Thank you, John, for helping us Team Up for Patient Safety every day. 💚

As part of our Patient Safety Awareness Week series, we’re continuing to highlight team members who help us Team Up for Patient Safety every day!

Today's Spotlight: Gregory P. - Mental Health Technician

Gregory supports patient safety by attentively following care plans, monitoring patients for any changes in their condition, and promptly reporting concerns to the nursing team. While working on Monarch, he assists patients with mobility, ensures proper use of equipment, and follows infection control protocols to help reduce the risk of falls and the spread of illness.

🤝 Patient Safety Awareness Week | March 8–14

At Silver Oaks, patient safety is a shared responsibility. This Patient Safety Awareness Week, we are embracing this year’s theme, “Team Up for Patient Safety,” by highlighting the power of collaboration across our hospital. Throughout the week, we’ll be spotlighting a staff member each day who helps strengthen patient safety through teamwork, communication, and compassionate care.

Today’s Patient Safety Spotlight: Taylor J. - Lead Program Therapist

Taylor helps improve patient safety by actively listening and remaining fully present with patients from the very beginning of their care. By understanding each patient’s individual needs, Taylor works to create a supportive treatment environment. This can include helping accommodate dietary restrictions, providing calming tools like journals or stress-relief items, and offering thoughtful supports such as photos of loved ones during difficult moments. Taylor also attends patient codes to help communicate with and support patients during times of crisis, helping de-escalate situations and ensure patients feel heard.

Taylor encourages patients and families to be active members of the care team by clearly explaining treatment options, leading family meetings, and helping them navigate complex systems like insurance, community resources, and aftercare planning. By promoting shared decision-making and advocating for each patient’s goals and values, Taylor helps ensure care remains patient-centered.

Looking ahead, Taylor plans to continue strengthening collaboration by enhancing communication with clinical staff and improving coordination with community aftercare providers so patients experience smoother transitions in care.

✨ “I value the collaborative environment the hospital fosters. My primary objective at SOBH is to make a meaningful difference for every patient I serve, which begins with close cooperation across the entire treatment team.”

Thank you, Taylor, for helping us Team Up for Patient Safety every day. 💚

For the fourth week of our Black History Month Pioneer Spotlight series, Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital honors Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint, a renowned psychiatrist, author, and advocate for mental health equity. Dr. Poussaint has dedicated his career to exploring the effects of racism, social inequities, and trauma on mental health, helping to bring awareness to challenges that have historically been overlooked in Black communities.

His work emphasizes the importance of culturally informed, compassionate care and the role of social context in understanding and supporting mental wellness. We continue his work by delivering care that respects each individual’s experiences and promotes lasting understanding and well-being.

As we close our Black History Month series, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of these pioneers, leaders, advocates, and visionaries whose work continues to inspire how we provide care, support our community, and champion equity in behavioral health. 💚
