Some bittersweet news this week: the world's oldest person - and oldest Daughter of Charity - passed away on Tuesday. Her ministry began in earnest after World War II, and she spent much of her life working in hospitals serving children and the elderly. An amazing life! Rest in peace, Sr. André.

Born Lucile Randon in 1904, Sister André spent most of her life in religious service as a Roman Catholic nun. The oldest living person is now Maria Branyas Morera of Spain at age 115.

Happy Thanksgiving Krewe of Hotel Dieu! Thank you for all you do to help us serve our New Orleans communities.

In 1899, the first Catholic School of Nursing in Louisiana was established at the Daughters of Charity Hotel Dieu hospital in New Orleans. Hotel Dieu was owned and operated by the Daughters of Charity beginning in 1858, and the only hospital to remain open during the Civil War. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, hotel Dieu hospital officially closed; the nursing school was closed in 1975.
