Last but definitely not least is our chicken, Ruby! She is the closest to what I expected a chicken to be 🐥 She is calm, loyal, doesn’t pick on anyone else, likes to be pet but doesn’t fight for our laps. She does follow me around while I’m cleaning the run or coop, and helpfully points out spots that I’ve missed, singing me a sweet little song the whole time. She’s a chicken who will lay brown eggs, and we got her from like all the rest. I appreciate her even temperament and soft tail feathers ❤️💫 I can’t believe the girls are already almost six weeks old!

This is Reina. She is a super beautiful with both tan and blue-gray feathers and piercing blue eyes. She has asserted her dominance in the pecking order from day one, and at first would only let my husband pet her. She is growing friendlier with my daughter and me lately, but has taken to flying onto our backs and heads in the last few days, especially if another bird is getting our attention. On the one hand, I’m totally intimidated by her seemingly wild nature, but I’m also really glad that she seems to look out for the rest of the flock, especially when birds of prey are hanging around. Our queen, part hen, part hawk 🧡👑

For those who may not be aware, there is a species of bee known as the blue calamintha. This bee is as you’d expect a bit blue in color unlike your average bee and for a while now has been seemingly gone from anyone’s view. This kind of bee is so rare to spot that many in the scientific world th...

Bluebell is our chick, and another lap chicken 😂 She seems to love being picked up and cuddled, especially by my daughter. She is SO SOFT. It’s hard to get a clear photo of her because she looks like a black ball of fluff, and we see a hint of green in her feathers when the sunshine hits her right. The catalog says she could grow to weigh 8.5 pounds 😳 More to cuddle 🥰

Here I am petting Sophie, Sophia Loren, named for her gorgeous eyeliner. This girl wants at least three sessions of lap time every single day. She watched part of a movie on my lap this evening 😂 We think she is a whiting true green. Her red coloring is vibrant and her feather patterns are show stopping — no awkward stage for this beauty. 💄🤩💖👑

This is Cleo. It’s hard to get a good photo of her because she moves so quickly. She is our smallest chick, an Egyptian Fayoumi. We are hoping she will do well in the brutal New Orleans summer heat. So far she doesn’t love being picked up or cuddled, but she LOVES treats. Today she devoured almost an entire blackberry before any other chicks could get a bite! She had the most gorgeous brown coloring and stripes as a small chick, and now her adult black and white feathers are filling in - white spots on black feathers below, black spots in white feathers up top.

Penny at three weeks old. She tweets nonstop each morning until someone picks her up. She sat on my daughter’s lap for 45 minutes yesterday snoozing, and still wasn’t in a hurry to return to the flock. She seems to be the least feathered out at this point, and doesn’t mind being treated like the baby of the family 🐥🥰
