Sometimes families just need someone to listen and hold space for them. This post is a great example of a day in the life of a hospice worker. We are here to educate and listen to our patients and family members, to lighten their load a little in whatever way we can. Our jobs don’t end at clinical care, we also provide emotional, spiritual and support with daily activities. By doing these things we support not only our patients but their family and caregivers . Call us today if you or someone you know needs support while struggling with a terminal illness.

Awhile back, I was talking to the 70-something-year-old daughter of my 90-something-year-old hospice patient.

She was sharing how her mother, with multiple illnesses, was now eating very, very little. The daughter was telling me all of the things she had tried in an attempt to get her mom to eat.

She was feeling guilty that nothing she had tried worked.

The daughter also shared the lengthy routine that is now in place related to toileting, as her mother is now fixated on this routine being completed many times a day.

She became tearful when sharing how exhausted she is and how she feels like she’s failing her mother.

While I did provide some resources during the visit (contacted our volunteer coordinator to add more volunteer respite visits, gave booklet “Always Offer, Never Force: Food at the End of Life” and online caregiver support group), the majority of what I did was provide space for the daughter to share her fears, worries and struggles related to caring for her mom.

After a couple of hours of talking, the daughter shared with me, “Wow. I really needed to get that all out. I feel a little lighter.”

To support caregivers, we need to provide a compassionate, judgment-free space (and time) for caregivers to release some of the nagging questions and fears that keep spinning around in their heads.

Listen, validate, hold space. 🩷
