When a woman/couple chooses artificial reproductive technologies, such as IVF, they do not envision what could go wrong.
They are often not told of the risks and dangers of bypassing the root cause of infertility in order to grasp at control over the outcome. The desire to have a child is extremely powerful and like many of our desires, they can lead us to take unnecessary risks.
These two studies, highlighted by are great examples of what happens when we do not address the underlying causes of infertility. Many women facing infertility are simply unhealthy. They often have hidden sources of inflammation such as insulin resistance, obesity, autoimmune diseases, and poor metabolic health. When these are ignored and the woman is given extreme doses of hormones in an attempt to achieve pregnancy in an unhealthy state, it makes sense that she will not be healthy after pregnancy either. In fact, disastrous health outcomes may result.
