✨Physical Therapy is an individualized process. We tailor our plans of care to each person that walks through the door. However, it is sometimes nice to get a general understanding of “what to expect” when you invest in your health.

🧐At NOLA Pelvic Health, we follow evidence based practices for all diagnoses, and we will clearly identify how many sessions you will require depending on the complexity of your symptoms and situation!

📆Typically, we see that when people attend therapy one time a week and wean to every other week and eventually once a month, their outcomes are achieved quicker and last longer!

🏃🏿‍♀️‍➡️This weaning process, offers you independence with the supervision of a physical therapist so if something arises, we can help you navigate it and get back on track!

As we get to the end of the school year we know things can get hectic, so please make a note of our cancellation policy! This policy is in place to make sure our waitlisted patients can get an appointment as soon as possible. 🎗️ MARCH is Endometriosis Awareness Month 🎗️

🎗️Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful disease that is characterized by inflammatory presence of endometrium-like tissue found outside of the uterus. In fact, the endometrium tissue can be found on any organ in the body, including the brain!

🎗️Endometriosis can cause overall chronic pain, painful periods, pain with s*x, painful bowel movements, stomach bloating and nausea, infertility, depression, and anxiety.

🎗️It is known to affect 1 out of every 10 women, but can take over a decade to properly diagnose due to the complexity of how the condition manifests in every individual and the history of medical myths and misconceptions of the disease.

🎗️One of our patients shared an amazing free resource called “Endometriosis: One Step at a Time” that details the complexity of this extra-pelvic condition.

https://alifewell-loved.org/p/endometriosis-one-step-at-a-time

🎗️ If you or a loved one believes they may have Endometriosis, NOLA Pelvic Health can help by using pelvic floor physical therapy to reduce pain and increase your quality of life! Come schedule today!

💧Stay hydrated: some of the best things during Mardi Gras are bladder irritants (king cake, alcohol, spicy foods), so staying hydrated throughout the day can help reduce bladder sensitivity and urgency so you can enjoy the party instead of being in the bathroom nonstop!
🏋🏼‍♂️Exhale and engage during exertion: whether you’re lifting/carrying kiddos from float to float or hauling the very important bag of throws to and from your car - try to blow out and engage your core during these activities to protect your PF.
🙀Squeeze before you scream: what we mean is, before yelling for your friend on the float, engage your pelvic floor. The increase in intra-abdominal pressure during yelling can increase your chance of urinary incontinence so prepping yourself can be a useful tip!
🚽When you can, don’t hover and definitely don’t push to p*e: yes the port-o-potties are nasty, so if you must hover, try to hold on to the railing. Either way, relax and breath, don’t rush to p*e you can always see the next band or the next float right down the block!
🎭See us after if something trips you and your pelvic floor up during Mardi Gras - relax, be safe, have fun, and enjoy!!

🤰🏾Pregnancy and Childbirth Preparation - learn all things pregnancy related, learn how to labor effectively with or without medication, practice appropriate pushing in various positions, perform perineal massage, and go over early postpartum return to activity. Bring your partner with you for extra support and teaching them how to assist you in your birth!
🏃🏼‍♀️Postpartum Return to Physical Activity - it can be intimidating to re-introduce activity following a birth (whether cesarean or vaginal). In postpartum sessions, we will focus on reconnecting to your core, performing higher level functional activity, and getting you back to doing what you love! We are all moms here so we know what you’re going through and want to assist the best we can!
⚧ Male, Female, and Transgender Pelvic Health therapy - this encompasses so much! Pelvic pain, urination issues, constipation or bowel issues, and s*xual dysfunction. In these sessions we focus on holistic, whole body approach to your symptoms and tackle each layer to get you feeling better and improve your quality of life!
🧘🏻‍♀️30 Min Dry Needling Session - need a little pick me up? These 30 minute dry needling sessions will help you feel refreshed and continue keeping you on the roll!
☎️Telehealth Consultations and Wellness - live far away? Can’t get away from the kiddos? We’ve got you covered - have a consultation with us and we will provide you with education and self-management for the comfort of your home!

💆🏽‍♀️ Scar massage is an essential part of therapy after any surgery, and that is the same following a cesarean delivery!
🧵 Many people struggle with scar sensitivity, numbness, and discomfort following a cesarean and this can limit them wearing certain clothes like jeans or tighter pants/skirts/dresses.
🧘🏼‍♀️ Starting gentle scar work early on can limit this dysfunction and get you back to improved mobility, reduced pain, and increased core strength!
😊 In addition, some people struggle immensely with touching their scar - AND THAT IS OKAY! That is where we come in and can help bridge that gap until you feel comfortable with your scar. Meanwhile, attempt placing a sheet over your scar while you do the scar massage work or just perform gentle diaphragmatic breathing with your hand over the scar!
📞 If you have had a cesarean, call 504-814-3615 to get an appointment to assess your scar and core strength! It is never too late to start working on this!

01/03/2024

Just like after any surgery, scar massage is an important place to start to ensure reduced adhesions, improved sensation, and return to prior level of function! The cesarean scar is typically right where your bikini line is and a lot of times people have difficulty wearing jeans or tighter clothes because of sensitivity or scar discomfort, but it does not have to be this way! If you feel you are struggling touching your scar, don’t fret! That is where a pelvic health therapist can help you along the way. In addition you can place a soft blanket over the scar, place your hand on the blanket, and start with some gentle diaphragmatic breathing to begin getting use to sensation around the scar! Call for an appointment today if you had a cesarean delivery! It is never too late to get started on abdominal mobility, strength, and reducing scar pain!

12/21/2023

🤰 Whether you have a vaginal or cesarean delivery, your pelvic floor muscles are greatly affected during pregnancy. With pregnancy, these muscles naturally lengthen and have a greater load (the uterus) to hold up during our normal daily activities. With the relaxin hormone that is released throughout pregnancy, we get ligament laxity, so our pelvic floor muscles have to work extra hard to provide pelvic stability.
💉 With any abdominal surgery, the abdominal muscles are impacted due to surgical incision, anesthesia, and limited mobility for recovery following surgery.
💪🏼 The abdominal muscles synergistically work with the pelvic floor, diaphragm, and low back muscles (the multifidi) for core strength, postural control, and pelvic stability. Therefore, if there is tension, weakness, mobility limitations, or pain in any of these regions, all of these muscles groups are going to be impacted.
🧘🏼‍♀️ Cesarean scar tissue adhesions can cause pain, limited mobility, fascial restrictions leading to tension and weakness at the pelvic floor and abdominal wall - making the low back work harder during functional activities such as lifting, carrying, and so on.
⭐️ These limitations can lead to common symptoms including dyspareunia (pain with in*******se), urinary urgency, constipation, and diastasis recti.
💫 Don’t be fooled into thinking a cesarean delivery “saves” your pelvic floor! Get working with a pelvic health therapist prior to your delivery and immediately postpartum to ensure a healthy recovery and return to prior level of activity! You deserve it :)

🌟 Postpartum Life: Juggling It All 🤹‍♀️

🏡👶💪 Postpartum life is already a whirlwind of emotions and responsibilities – from getting back to feeling like ourselves, caring for our little ones, managing household chores, to squeezing in daily tasks.

🙅‍♀️ Let's not pile on another challenge: discomfort and pain during intimacy. It can add stress to individuals and relationships. But here's the silver lining: You don't have to endure it!

🌈 There are various reasons for pain during in*******se, like perineal trauma, vaginal dryness (thanks to breastfeeding), pelvic floor muscle tension, or even mental health factors like stress and fear.

💖 But guess what? Pelvic floor therapy is here to the rescue! 💫 It can help you overcome these challenges and rediscover comfort and joy in your postpartum journey.
