I’m now grateful for the times friends forced me to take sweaty early morning post practice photos with Sharathji. I’d pour my whole heart out on the mat each day with everyone in the shala and definitely was not ready for photos but now I’m grateful.

I remember on this trip he’d leave me to figure things out and struggle during a few asanas. He’d help the person next to me doing the same thing or let someone else perch on a towel or rest but for me he’d say no or no resting go. I mean he’d done that before but I thought this was a bit much.

Why are you being so hard on me I asked him. He laughed a little and joked back that it was so I would learn. He was good at helping me grow. All of us. Sometimes he was so tough on me and other times really sweet or cracking jokes. But always helping me and all the students learn. That was always the priority.

Sometimes he made me so mad or frustrated. I remember once he made a joke and it hurt my feelings. He immediately apologized. He was such a kind person. An amazing teacher.
I know every person had a different experience. This was mine.

Every day I was away from the shala I was imagining I was back there and planning my next trip. Every moment I was in the shala I was pinching myself the whole time. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. And every turning point in life I’d always think to myself that I’d just go to India. That was always the answer. Go to my other home. Practicing in the shala with Sharath.

With Pattabhi Jois’ passing I think it gave me a sense of how precious each moment in the shala was. Still I could have never imagined that that was all the time we all had together in this life. We were so lucky. We are so lucky to have memories and stories and practice.

It’s both things. It’s beautiful and devastating.

Practice has been healing and difficult. All the hidden places for emotions to go. But also he’s there as usual and even louder than before. And practice is smoothing out slowly slowly.

Teaching has been healing and difficult. He’s there as usual. Some moments and days are a real struggle. But it’s what he would’ve wanted. And we all just keep showing up and practicing.

About me: I have practiced yoga since 2001, started teaching in 2004, initiated practice with the Jois family in 2006 in NYC, started to go to Mysore to practice at the source in 2007, was Authorized Level 2 in 2010. I am offering these teachings exactly as I learned from my teacher Sharath Jois and in his honor. He taught us each individually. This is what I’ve learned 🙏🏽
