Our board received this awful news today. The staff at the health center were there as first responders and we are so grateful, but deeply saddened that this tragedy occurred:
"Dear tenants, neighbors, supporters, and friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this note. This afternoon at roughly 4:20 in the afternoon, there was a shooting in front of the Cajun Seafood at the corner of Washington Avenue and South Broad. The shooter injured three people, who we understand were students at a local school. The report we have in passing from a school official is that two of those students are stable and one is in critical condition. The police were on the scene almost immediately, and they apprehended the suspected shooter near Tulane and Galvez, where he crashed the vehicle he was driving. More details are coming out now, and we will share what we know with you when we know it.
However, it is also our charge to figure out next steps from here, and how we press forward striving to improve the communities that we call home. We are as committed to that call as ever, and we look forward to working with each of you to make this little corner of our city a safe, thriving place filled with opportunity. To that end, we will be holding a town hall meeting tomorrow(Tuesday) at 10 am at the Propeller Building, 4035 Washington Avenue, to discuss how we should respond to this event, and what we can do to further our collective efforts to end this type of senseless violence.
Peace,
Will
