Words feel inadequate to express the overwhelming gratitude I feel upon learning I’ve been selected for the 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. To receive such a prestigious honor from the Biden Administration, recognizing years of volunteer service, is truly humbling. This journey has never been about individual accolades, but about the collective impact we can make when we come together to serve our communities.

I am particularly thankful to for this nomination and for their tireless work in creating positive change. Your foundational principles of empowerment, inspiration, and education resonate deeply with me. It’s an honor to be recognized by an organization that so authentically centers community and advocates for healing and solutions. Your belief in me, as expressed in the letter, is a gift.

I am reminded that any positive change I’ve contributed is built upon the support and collaboration of countless individuals. It’s the people I’ve worked alongside, the communities we’ve served, and the shared passion for making a difference that truly deserve recognition. I am so excited to celebrate alongside everyone at “A Night in Black”. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am truly grateful for this recognition and for the opportunity to continue serving.

The Beyjorettes were so honored to volunteer at NOLA HEALS: The Road Towards Renewal and Recovery yesterday! It was inspiring to see so many members of our New Orleans community come together to heal, connect, and work towards a safer future. We believe in the power of unity and supporting each other, and we were deeply moved by the stories shared and the collaborative spirit in the room. Events like these, focused on fostering healing, discussing our community’s needs, and brainstorming solutions, are so vital. We’re proud to be part of a community dedicated to positive change.

My heart is absolutely shattered by the horrific violence that struck our city in the first few hours of the New Year. I’m still reeling, trying to make sense of this senseless tragedy that has shaken us all to our core. To think that such a thing could happen here, in our own community, on a day meant for hope and new beginnings… it’s beyond comprehension.

I’m deeply saddened, yes, but I’m also filled with a burning outrage. How could anyone inflict such pain and suffering on innocent people? My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone who has been impacted by this devastating event. I can’t even imagine the pain they must be going through right now.

This tragedy has cast a dark shadow over our city, but I refuse to let it define us. We are New Orleans. We are resilient. We are strong. And we will get through this together. We must support one another, offer comfort to those who are hurting, and work towards a future free from violence. Even in the face of such darkness, I hold onto the hope that love and unity will ultimately prevail. We must demand better. We deserve better. 🙏🏾

Life has a way of transforming pain into purpose, and I’ve seen this firsthand. This year, I had the honor of volunteering to give a free grief workshop for Black women in the New Orleans area at the Dear Beloved Picnic. It reminded me how sharing our stories can light the way for others, showing that it’s possible to navigate through the darkest storms.

Grief doesn’t follow a linear path; it ebbs and flows, often unexpectedly. Five years have passed since I lost my mother, yet some days, it feels like just yesterday. This year has been particularly challenging, with my grief leading me down some dark roads. But even in the darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of light. Every dark day must end, and I’m immensely grateful for the chance to support other women with stories like mine.

Grief is hard. It’s messy, and it doesn’t follow a schedule. It’s okay to fall apart sometimes, but remember to gather your pieces and rebuild. If you need help doing that, reach out. We weren’t meant to journey through life alone. We were designed to live in community.

Find your people. Find your support. Give yourself grace. And remember, no matter how dark the day, midnight will come, and with it, a new beginning.

Very busy Saturday, but there is always time and room for on my calendar. The youth of New Orleans count on us it’s both my privilege and responsibility to be there for them when we they call. I throughly enjoyed meeting the 2024 cohort of youth leaders who are ready and willing to advocate for change and be the voice of the voiceless. Let’s get to work! 💪🏾👏🏾🙌🏾

I had a beautiful and powerful evening, thanks to the invitation from the Power Coalition of Equity & Justice to attend the reception and movie premiere of “Shirley,” honoring Shirley Chisholm. Chisholm, the trailblazing first African American to seek a major party’s presidential nomination and also my Soror, faced the harsh reality that being a woman was often more detrimental than being Black.

Throughout the biopic, a poignant revelation emerged: despite the shared identity of being Black women, unwavering support was not always present. Shirley’s journey illuminated the complexities of intersectional struggles, where gender bias compounded the challenges she faced. This recognition added a deeper layer to the already formidable battles she fought.

As we reflect on International Women’s Month, Soror Shirley Chisholm’s legacy reminds us of the nuanced nature of oppression. While her historic candidacy may not have secured the presidency, her courage and resilience continue to inspire us to confront societal barriers and fight for equality. As she famously proclaimed, “We must become revolutionaries. We must refuse to accept the old, the traditional roles and stereotypes…We must replace the old, negative thoughts about our femininity with positive thoughts and positive action affirming it, and more. But we must also remember that we will be breaking with tradition, and so we must prepare ourselves educationally, economically, and psychologically in order that we will be able to accept and bear with the sanctions that society will immediately impose upon us.”
