I’ve been licensed in NY and I’m currently licensed in Israel. I have 8+ years experience in Early intervention, school based OT and my specialty in feeding.

And most of what I learned, I learned outside of school. On the job. Through real life. From my clients. And I fee so honored to be the provider my clients are looking for. The provider I would want on my side.

I’ll share more from my clients’ perspective in another post and I’m checking the comments to hear from you!

What are your thoughts?

If you’ve switched to screen free was it a lot of effort on your part? What was most challenging? Have your kids learned to play independently or to be bored?

If you’ve found some middle ground what does that look like for you? Do you make exceptions? When?

Do your kids watch by mealtimes? How did that get started and how is it going?

Would love to hear your experiences.

How you ask makes a difference!

Asking kids if they want veggies opens the possibility they will say no.

Asking them which veggies they want, offers them a choice and increases their chance of choosing something.

Offering veggies that are ready on a plate is the best way to increase their chance chances of kids actually eating!

Want your kids to eat more fruits?
-prepare it so it’s ready to eat
-use toothpicks ( the ones with umbrellas or shiny fuzzy tops are even better)
- offer your sensory sensitive child an end piece that is single textured. Give it like a lolly pop and suggest he may want to just lick it, to get an idea of how it tastes.

What are your go to snacks? Do you notice a difference if you prepare it vs. if your kids take something on their own?

You don’t need to love them to eat them.

You can eat them because they are nutritious. As long as that is your conscious choice.

You don’t need to love them to eat them frequently. You can eat them daily because you see they help you feel good.

You don’t need to eat them bland, boring, or on their own. You can experiment with seasoning, try them different ways and have them alongside another more preferred food.

You definitely don’t need to love the smell. You can have a flavored drink while you eat. This will neutralize the smell and taste and make it a more tolerable sensory experience.

What food are you eating even if it’s not your favorite because there is value for you to have it in your diet?

Try it.

Children build narratives about everything they experience.

A common narrative is that there are foods that the child eats, and foods that others eat ( siblings, grown ups).

Parents tend to push children to eat “others” foods but don’t think about changing the narrative by joining their children while they eat their preferred foods.

I mean when is the last time you ate a graham cracker? Or a puff? Or sat down to bowl of blueberries? When is the last time you joined your child for snack?

Are you going to try this? Does this make sense? What food can you share with your child?

Do you want your kids to have something filling in the morning? Do you believe it’s important to eat so kids blood sugar stays balanced? Do you see how entry they learn and behave when they are nourished?

And are you not at the, ”I make my kids eggs every school morning,” stage?

Then you are like me. And while this is not a hearty sit down meal, these oatmeal cookies are a good grab on the go option.

I’ll reshare my olive oil recipe in stories. Here is the dairy one.

1 1/2 cups spelt flour
1tsp salt
1tsp baking soda
1cup softened butter
1cup brown sugar
1tsp vanilla
2eggs
2cups old fashioned oats
1 tblsp ground flax seeds
Chocolate chips

So when parents tell me their children eat better when they are in front of a screen, I tell them they are right, but is the price worth it?

Do your kids eat while watching? Are they dependent on a screw ? Do they ask for it? How do they do without it?

Would you want to wean off the screen?

The answer is yes and no!

What has your experience been?

What other factors do you see influencing your child’s eating habits?

Research indicates that children of selective eaters have higher risks of being selective eaters because:

* parents may bring less variety into the home
* parents may have less structure around food options
* parents model eating less variety

So if you are a picky eater but you:

* bring variety into the home
* structure mealtimes so your children have exposure to new foods
* model willingness to try/ flexibility/ interest in new foods

Your kids have every possibility to be great food explorers!

Before bed snack!

You want the kids to go to bed. They want to stay up.

They haven’t eaten anything nutritious all day!

Suddenly they are starving.

This is your opportunity.

Offer something quick, easy and with some nutrition.

You initiate it. You choose what to serve. You include at least one currently preferred food. You be consistent.

That’s how it works best. And any progress is also good!
