Hola de la República Dominicana! 🇩🇴

PGY3’s Dr. Domonique Parkes and Dr. Gabriela Romero just completed their Global EM electives in the DR

They learned about pathologies endemic to the region and how to adapt and improvise patient care in a resource limited setting. Our almost attendings also had a chance to hone their radiology skills, as at that hospital they had to read their own imaging!

What a cool way to wrap up residency! 🎉

We would like to honor and recognize several exceptionally talented and brilliant physicians in our ED residency family:

🔹Dr. Anton Wray- Program Director

🔹Dr. Orinthia King - Ultrasound Director

🔹Dr. Ivie Omoruyi - Faculty Attending

🔹Dr. Domonique Parkes - PGY3 (and almost attending!!)

🔹Dr. Temple Ihedinmah - PGY2 Resident

Dr. Ihedinmah says that being a Black physician is both an honor and a privilege and that he is proud to be part of the change that he wished to see.

Dr. Omoruyi reflects,
“I have a responsibility to my community to show up and help them when there are most vulnerable to be comfortable and trust me that I am on their side. Majority of patients that come here are black and brown people and seeing someone that looks like them gives them a sense of trust that everything will be ok.”

🔹🔹🔹

Black history is to be appreciated not just this month, but every day. And it is every day that our doctors deliver diligent and compassionate care while advocating for their patients and inspiring the next generation.

All of us at Wyckoff EM are proud to celebrate our Black physicians 💜

This Black History month we will reflect on the disparities in the medical system and how they affect patients, providers and entire communities.
▪️
During the height of the pandemic, we saw how Black communities had significantly higher rates of COVID-19 due to systemic limitations causing them to be at greater risk. An article posted last week by CNN Health highlights the extremely low percentage of Black physicians in the work force and the detriments of this disparity to public health.
▪️
Only a handful of decades ago, Black individuals were not even allowed to attend some medical schools in the USA.
Access to care is limited in many Black communities, as is access to opportunities for education and financial progress. The current low percentage of Black physicians is reflected by a lack of sufficient representation in positions of leadership in healthcare overall.
▪️
Although some progress has occurred, the pervading problems of institutionalized racism, and bias (both active and unconscious) are still far from eradication.
The onus of promoting diversity in medicine should not fall only on our Black colleagues. We each must undertake the responsibility of making systemic racism more apparent and working against it, for the better future of medicine and for better outcomes for our patients of all backgrounds.

Meet the Chiefs! 👏

Dr. Gomez Jonathan is the academic chief and Dr. Zoe Rocke is the administrative chief.

Jonathan grew up in Miami and went to Ross University for medical school.
Zoe grew up living in California, RHODE Island, and Florida. She went to medical school at St. George’s University 🩺

For fun, Zoe enjoys working out, cooking, and spending time with loved ones. Jonathan also enjoys hanging out with friends and exploring the food and entertainment scene
👟🏋️‍♀️🌮🎉

Zoe says that the biggest takeaway from chief year for her is developing her teaching and mentorship skills. Jonathan also appreciates that he is now a stronger teacher and takes pride in observing resident growth 💙

We’re so grateful for all the hard work that Zoe and Jonathan put in — they’re going to be excellent faculty attendings next year 👏👏
