What is Narcissistic abuse and How does it harm those affected by it in interpersonal relationships (the short of it):

Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional abuse characterized by manipulation and control tactics used by someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD); or an antagonistic and/or narcissistic personality style (a person doesn't have to have NPD). This abuse can manifest in various relationships, including romantic, familial, and professional ones. It significantly impacts victims, leading to confusion, anxiety, low self-esteem, and a distorted sense of reality. Victims may experience isolation, financial abuse, and even develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

So many of us are exposed to difficult, antagonistic (toxic) relationships from our family of origin and we grow up believing emotional dysfunction, emotional immaturity, people pleasing and lack of boundaries are "normal" so when we a partner that "feels so familiar, like I've known them for years" and fall in love; we could be potentially drawn to the "familiar" which is really "toxic" or dysfunctional. Therapy helps us sort these confusing feelings to understand wha is healthy connection vs "familiar"
