It’s time to raise hell.

Abortion is HEALTHCARE. Abortion is our right to privacy. Our bodily autonomy is about to be determined by 9 individuals. Some of whom will never be pregnant but will codify women’s bodily rights into law.

Women are already having to cross state lines to receive the care they need.  Women are already being incarcerated for self-induced abortions because they cannot get they care they need. Soon doctors won’t be able to terminate a life-threatening pregnancy as long as there is fetal cardiac activity. This means ectopic pregnancies and so many other conditions that endanger women’s lives.

Call your lawmakers. Show up for midterm elections. Protest . Donate to your local abortion fund . Abortion is still legal and we need to keep it that way.

Mental health goes hand in hand with (in)fertility and should be prioritized as part of the journey but often gets overlooked when we go into panic mode, especially during fertility treatment.

After a major pregnancy loss, I decided to invest in my mental well-being and try to figure out what I could get out of talking through all my doubts, pain, uncertainty, irrational questions, guilt, anxiety, and grief. A year into it, my therapist Liz Greene had weathered so much with me - highs and more lows, and everything in between. The greatest gift of the experience (no, it wasn’t a baby) was getting some of my confidence back and feeling equipped to continue to move forward no matter what lay ahead. Learning how to celebrate even the smallest of achievements and repeating mantras to myself when I spiraled. In this week’s issue of , I talked about some of the coping tools Liz taught me which I still use now.

A huge thanks to and for allowing me to share a small part of my complex story and of course to Liz Greene who helped (and continues to help) me stay afloat during some dark times. (Her website is http://lizgreenetherapy.com for anyone interested!) Link in bio for the full piece in this week’s issue of the magazine!

Okay, this is a scary headline…but there have been more and more scientific reports on the effects that endocrine disrupting chemicals have on female and male fertility.

Q: So, what are these chemicals and how do they affect us?

A: Let’s break it down. The truth is, they are everywhere: plastics, shampoos, soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, cushions, pesticides, canned foods and receipts. You won’t see them on ingredient labels and they can be incredibly difficult to avoid.

They interfere with normal hormonal function and mimic the body’s hormones - testosterone and estrogen, and fool our cells. The culprits are BPAs, phthalates and parabens.

PSA it’s not just women who are affected!

Reproductive health scholars have seen a major decline (59%) in s***m count and quality of average men in recent years. That includes more oddly-shaped s***m - sometimes two-headed, and fewer strong swimmers that can fertilize an egg. But most importantly, the DNA they carried was also more damaged which can lead to chromosomal abnormalities and/or miscarriage . The outlook for women isn’t great either when it comes to egg quality.  This goes for anyone trying to conceive naturally or through fertility treatments!

Solutions anyone? Here are some things you can do right away:

1. When it comes to skincare, cosmetics, fragrances, household items, cleaning supplies - make sure the packaging or the brand’s website states that the product is phthalate, paraben and BPA free.  Sometimes products have “fragrance” listed as an ingredient but will not disclose what that is. If in doubt, opt for fragrance-free vs unscented!

2. Use glass or metal containers for water bottles and tupperware/food storage instead of plastic.

3. Don’t microwave your food in plastic and avoid nonstick cookware.

- While John makes the soup 🍲 let’s talk …

Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting 1 in 10 women that occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus, in places such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines and bladder. This usually translates to very painful periods, debilitating cramps, heavy and prolonged bleeding, and infertility. On the flip side, many women can have silent endometriosis with no symptoms but end up having challenges with conceiving.

Both can take years to diagnose, but why?! One reason is because women are conditioned to believe that our periods need to be painful and we should just deal with it, so we go years struggling silently, OR our doctors don’t necessarily hear us when we describe the pain we experience.

Another reason is that while there are some diagnostic tools to diagnose endometriosis, the only definitive method of diagnosis is through laparoscopic surgery and biopsy of affected tissue. No matter what, don’t ignore the pain EVER! Talk to your doctor - and make sure they HEAR you. Periods don’t need to be painful.

If you don’t have many symptoms, but you are having trouble conceiving or have had failed embryo transfers with genetically tested embryos, press your doctor to look into whether you might have endometriosis. Make your voice heard!
