At Rose Garden Speech, we love expanding children's expressive language by adding one word to their phrases. If your child says, "car!" you can add on, "big car" or "fast car." Pause a moment after you model and see if they'll repeat what you said!

Want an easy way to get your kids communicating? Be forgetful! Instead of anticipating what your child needs and giving it to them before they ask, give them the opportunity to ask for "more" while eating or on the swing.

At Rose Garden Speech, we believe any ole' object can be used as a toy AND encourage communication! Here's how we use stacking cups (or any household cups):

Build a tower! Model, "up, up, up! uh oh! The cups fell...down!" Pause before you say "down" to encourage your child to fill in the word.

Use the cups to play pretend: have a tea party or use the cup as a walkie talkie/phone!

Hide objects underneath the cups and play "peek-a-boo" or say "hi/bye" to each item. This helps with labeling objects in a fun, engaging game.

Make Music: use the cups as drums and "pat, pat, pat" or put an object in a cup and "shake, shake, shake." Doing actions while you model the words help build your child's ability to use verbs.

Put objects "in/out" and "under/on top" of the cups - this builds understanding and use of spatial prepositions!

Try it and let us know how it goes! Making use of daily objects makes learning communication so much fun!

At Rose Garden Speech Therapy, we love imitation games—they're a fantastic way to engage with your baby and stimulate language development. Here’s a fun way to incorporate imitation into your playtime:

Follow Their Lead: If your child bangs cups together, join in and do the same. Show them that their actions are interesting and worth imitating.

Take Turns: After copying their actions, pause and give your child a chance to copy you. This turn-taking is a basic form of communication and teaches them the flow of conversation.

Encourage Repetition: When they imitate you, express joy and encouragement. Keep the imitation game going by imitating them back!
