“Did you know, maternal mental health disorders, like postpartum depression, are more common than breast cancer or gestational diabetes?” —

The most common maternal mental health disorders are anxiety followed by depression. These disorders can be mild or so severe they become debilitating.

A study conducted during the pandemic shows that rates of clinically significant anxiety and depression symptoms have more than doubled - rising to 72% and 41%, respectively - among pregnant and postpartum women.

All women are at risk though disparities are stark. Women of color and low-income mothers are faced with overwhelming stressors and, not surprisingly, are several times more likely to experience maternal anxiety or depression., AND are less likely to receive treatment.

Maternal Mental Health Disorders onset during pregnancy, prior to pregnancy or in the postpartum period. When a mother isn’t properly supported and treated, symptoms can persist for years, impacting her own health and well-being and potentially her baby’s.

This week, you can get involved by sharing these daily campaign posts. And, if you are a mom, you can also share photos of your motherhood moments this week so we can illustrate that motherhood is never black and white, it’s often grey, hard, and messy.

Last year, I had the great opportunity in becoming a volunteer support coordinator with Postpartum Support International. I was able to help many moms in the past year, and hoping to continue to do so in the future.
The Climb Out of the Darkness event (PSI Climb Out of the Darkness) is the world’s largest event, raising funds and awareness for the mental health of moms and their families. It’s a community walk and an international fundraiser for survivors, providers, and members of the community to come together and raise awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), the Climb brings our community together to shine a light on a darkness we don’t often speak about. PMADs are the most common complications of childbearing – shocking news, right? It’s unfortunate that many people are not aware of this and that moms don’t get the support and help that they need in this country. They say it takes a village, but not everyone has that village. This year, I have the privilege in becoming a Climb Leader and leading the first ever Climb on Staten Island. I want to create a village for moms to lean on and I want to be a part of their village. If you are interested in becoming a Climb leader or to check if there is a Climb in your area, please visit – https://www.postpartum.net/join-us/climbout/
I am Climbing for all the moms who went through a difficult time postpartum, for all the moms who are currently in it and for all the future moms. We will get out of this darkness together! Please join me on June 25th for the first ever Climb on Staten Island – more information to come. So, save the date and come support your wife, mom, sister, niece, aunt, and/or friend. Moms are the glue to the family, come and show them the support that they truly deserve and together let’s destigmatize the struggles moms go through and shine a light on their darkness. All are welcome to come, this will be a free family event with activities for kids and adults and a fun filled day.
I am leading this event as a volunteer because this cause means a lot to me, if you would like to sponsor this event in any way, I would greatly appreciate it. Please private message me if you’re interested. I am especially looking for activities and games for kids, entertainment for kids (magician, face painting), snacks/water, giveaways and raffle prizes for moms (e.g.: spa, nail salon, hair salon, facials, self-care gift baskets). Gift card donations are accepted as well.

You are good enough ❤️ All moms struggle, none of us are perfect and we are all doing the best we can! Take it one day at a time.

You are doing the best you can. Breathe. Ask for forgiveness. Start fresh each day. Remember all parents struggle with different things. You will never be perfect.

💙 You are good enough! 💙

I became a Climb Leader because I know how hard it is mentally after having a baby. I want to promote awareness on maternal mental health and to create a support group in my own community, for moms and their families to seek support without feeling ashamed. There's a stigma around maternal mental health, we automatically assume we are not good enough for the way we feel. No one is meant to climb alone, together we will climb out of this darkness!!

Climb out of the darkness is the world’s largest event raising funds and awareness for the mental health of new families. This year will be the first ever climb on Staten Island. I want to bring our community together to shine a light on the darkness that we often don't speak about - Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Stay tuned, more details to come.
