Type Mechanism / Notes Common Examples

Typical (First-Generation) Primarily dopamine D2 receptor antagonists. Effective for positive symptoms of schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions). Higher risk of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), tardive dyskinesia, and hyperprolactinemia. - Haloperidol (Haldol)
- Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
- Fluphenazine (Prolixin)
- Perphenazine

Atypical (Second-Generation)
Block both dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. Treat positive and negative symptoms (apathy, social withdrawal). Lower risk of EPS but higher risk of metabolic side effects (weight gain, diabetes, dyslipidemia). - Risperidone (Risperdal)
- Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
- Quetiapine (Seroquel)
- Aripiprazole (Abilify)
- Clozapine (Clozaril)
