Something worth waking up at 5:30am and driving 2 hrs for. I had the best time learning about the farms on the Black Farm Tour. A reminder that community work is intersectional.

Farms Visited and Lessons Learned:
1. Healing Hope Urban Garden: Keep showing up for what you believe in, tell good people your hopes and dreams, you never know who might have what you need

2. Real Roots: the money is in Compost and worms are remarkable creatures

3. 31st St Urban Farm: Permaculture could save us all, design with intention

4. Sankofa Orchard: this isn't about planting pretty flowers and fruit trees, it gives purpose and intentional space to community and offers the learning that won't come from a diluted school system

My classmates and I decided to share first day of school photos this semester. I'm looking forward to everything! The births, fidgets while in class all day, so much reading, the group chats, seeing everyone in person for test-outs, baby pictures, after recording get real moments, using my French press everyday!

Taking one birth and one or 2 more postpartum clients in the DMV before I head down to Harrisonburg. I'm very excited about this transition. If you know anyone in Shenandoah Valley, let know I'll be offering services down there soon!

I also want to thank people who have been sharing and offering kind words of encouragement. I know times are crazy right now and so many people need support.

One day we'll operate more community focused, more mutual aid that goes beyond financial means.

When you're learning how to be a midwife, of course you want to compare pelvic exams of people in different phases of life!

It's getting real now! Our test-outs were:
🪷 Complete Physical Exam
🪷 Prenatal Exam
🪷 Leopold's Maneuver
🪷 Estimating Due Date w/ Naegle's and a wheel
🪷 Clean Catch Sample
🪷 Fundal Height
🪷 Fetal Heart Rate
🪷 Abdominal Exam after 28wks
🪷 Urinalysis

We learned:
🌸 Pelvic Exam
🌸 Inserting a Speculum
🌸 Cervix Observation
🌸 Hemoglobinometer
🌸 Hemocue

You won't learn this in school...

Two of the most concerning pregnancy concerns are pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. Normally handled post discovery with medications or handled with things like baby aspirin.

Deep dive with community, common sense, and some of that House curiosity and we can find holistic preventative ways to deal with these things.

I want you to stay with the midwife you choose.

I am freshly returned from Test Outs and one complete year since I officially began the student midwife journey! 🥳🥳

It has been an interesting year of transition and I couldn't have done it without all the incredible people I have met so far!

I want to send thanks to my SWTC Cohort, Black student midwives study group, for pulling me out of the impending dread of mainstream midwifery and back into the core and heart of this work. It's been a joy to sit in circle, at the feet of elder midwives, sharing stories, experiences, and questions with other LEARNING midwives. 💖

Birth is a cultural, spiritual, and deeply human experience that requires the balance of heart and medical work.

MLK Jr. also said "Our ultimate end must be the creation of the beloved community"

Your best bet for birth is to create a team of support. This includes who is birthing your baby, who reminds you birth is a natural process that the body knows how to do, who helps clean the house and holds the baby while you shower.

I will keep answering "What is the difference between a doula and midwife?" until black maternal outcomes don't look so bleak anymore.

Express interest in wanting a midwife so the world begins to accommodate it. Support community care be thinking differently about how you budget for care. Midwives deserve a liveable wage.

Midwifery School is a challenge and a half but providing care in the community keeps me focused on the purpose.

I'm thrilled to be settling into Washington DC and even more excited to learn more about the families here. Spread the word that my calendar is now open for postpartum care this Spring through the DMV.

The dream lives inside and outside of me
Jan 2025 is my official start of Midwifery School even though I've been in classes for 2 semesters now
The journey is already pushing me in so many ways but I know I am smart, resilient, crafty, and energetic.

I hope I can remember to post more so everyone who believed in me can see I'm doing great.

Happy World Doula Week to all the doulas who identify community needs. The world feels heavy right now, and that might mean families in your immediate community who need support more than ever, families who need alternative packages, families who have reduced income in the time of rising prices.

Every day, we work to increase access to whole person reproductive care.

We also have to remember that doulas are also people supporting their own families with their own needs. Doulas need doulas, too!

I'm happy to work within my own capacity to provide more virtual services to families who want to chat, plan, and everything in between.

I'm also excited to add on Placenta Encapsulation to my list of services. It's your Placenta! Do what you want with it!
