Interested in studying ? NYGSP student Ethan Gibbs shares his reasons for attending our master’s program in psychoanalytic studies:

1. How did you find the program and why did you choose the program?

I found the program online a few years ago when I was researching psychoanalytic institutes in the US. Around that time a good friend of mine, who is now an analyst herself, was telling me about Hyman Spotnitz and Modern Psychoanalysis. It wasn’t until later that I found that NYGSP was affiliated with the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies (CMPS). I chose this program because it is the only accredited independent graduate school of psychoanalysis in the country.

2. Why do you want to become a psychoanalyst?

Professionally, my decision to become a psychoanalyst was informed by my many years of work in the mental health field. After my undergraduate studies in psychology, my work in the field followed the cognitive model of treatment. I found it reductionistic and lacking the humanity I believe is needed to work with people who are struggling. Psychoanalysis offers a truly dynamic understanding of human motivation and behavior, and addresses development at a level that recognizes the influence of unconscious factors.

3. What are things that you think are special about our school and/or modern psychoanalysis?

NYGSP’s approach is highly individualized and has given me a solid foundation in psychoanalytic theory. Small class sizes allow for individualized exploration, and it’s been very helpful to explore unconscious psychodynamics in a group setting. What I like best about this program is that when I complete my master’s degree I will be eligible for advanced placement in the licensure-qualifying psychoanalytic training program of the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies.

How did you find the program and why did you choose the program?

I became aware of the program through a flyer I saw for years in one of my undergraduate classes. On the last day of my senior year, I took a photo and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to check it out. I attended an open house and found that I really liked the orientation. It really clicked with me. I felt at home. It was the only program I applied to.

Why do you want to become a psychoanalyst?

Ever since I was a child I was drawn to the field of psychology. It just felt natural to me–listening, identifying emotional patterns, helping people to work through their issues. Studying psychoanalysis is more than just an academic pursuit, it has helped me to get to know and understand myself more deeply. I hope to use what I have learned to help other people experience the great feeling of growing in these ways.

What are things that you think are special about our school and/or modern psychoanalysis?

I really enjoy the process-oriented classes. Everyone communicates openly on both an intellectual and emotional level. I really look forward to the classes, which are different from any other I have ever experienced. Some people have the mistaken idea that psychoanalysis is dated, but I find that modern psychoanalysis is very applicable to the problems people experience in contemporary society. I believe that if psychoanalysis becomes more accessible, people will find it the most enticing option among the various approaches to therapy.

How did you find the program and why did you choose the program?

After years of ignoring the off-hand comments from my therapist about the desirability of this program, looked into getting a master's degree in education. I had begun a job working with children using playwork principles, and I realized quickly that education was not going to be my preferred path. I took the CMPS intro course on Introduction to Modern Psychoanalysis and realized quickly that this was what I wanted to learn and the way that I wanted to go about learning. The program complimented complemented my work with children beautifully.

Why do you want to become a psychoanalyst?

I am always curious about how we develop our minds to survive the chaos of living. I know from personal experience that working with another person can shift some of those survival mechanisms. There is something that happens in this strange relationship that offers a window into understanding ourselves.

What are things that you think are special about our school and/or modern psychoanalysis?

I realize that process learning can be uncomfortable for some, as can be psychoanalysis. I love the progression of each class over the course of a semester: the boiling of aggression, the bubbling of libido. While we are reading and studying sometimes-dense theory, we are also pulling back layers to expose feelings that will be helpful to understand and to tolerate when we work with clients. I appreciate how this school also explores other psychoanalytic schools of thought and welcomes criticism.

As clinicians brought up in a racialized society we are limited by our implicit bias. The dynamics of socialization across the racial ethnic divide, a growing area of recent research, helps us understand how that area of implicit bias develops.

How did you find the program and why did you choose the program?

When I decided to go back to school to study psychoanalysis I attended several open houses at institutes around the city. One thing I learned was that I would need a master’s degree or higher to be admitted to a licensure-qualifying psychoanalytic training institute. I did some research and found that NYGSP is the only school in New York to offer the master of arts in psychoanalytic studies. And NYGSP was having an open house the very next week! I attended, and immediately felt at home. There seemed to be a real sense of community – a community of singular intellectuals with an interest in narcissism, psychosis, and other deep topics, like myself. The decision to apply was a no-brainer.

Why do you want to become a psychoanalyst?

To attempt to understand myself, my family, and the people around me.

What are things that you think are special about our school and/or modern psychoanalysis?

The program is small, with intimate, seminar-style classes that facilitate experiential learning. Unlike traditional Freudian psychoanalysis, modern psychoanalysis teaches technical approaches to treating preoedipal, as well as higher-functioning, patients.
