Humble Beginnings to A Better Future...Humildes Comienzos hacia Un Futuro Mejor
Coming from a family of immigrants and growing up in the tough neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York, we didn´t have access to healthcare. The only reasons my father would (could, since we didn´t have insurance) take me to the doctor was either to get my vaccinations or being “nearly dead” on the sofa. Otherwise, he treated me using traditional and naturalistic methods he grew up with from Latin America...I forgot the children’s vitamins he also gave me...
After a major car accident in 1998, and subsequent injuries (including torn shoulder labra) my current state of health consists of dealing with chronic pain and other issues related to those injuries. Apart from a few extra pounds, and abdominal hernias that haven´t been operated on, I don´t have any medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. These conditions, along with heart disease, stroke, and cancer run in my family, and I’ve been fortunate in not developing these conditions. My pain management/self-care regimen consists of the following: basic stretching, Tai Chi, some Yoga positions, taking Chinese and Western herbs & supplements, regulating my dietary intake and food preparation, and receiving acupuncture and chiropractic treatments...This routine has helped me avoid surgeries and being bedridden. It has also provided me the energy and strength to work for 12+ hours as an Emergency/Critical Care Nurse, meanwhile caring for all of our patients, whether in-home or office. (Ask me about how I was able to reduce my recent common cold/viral flu infection down to 3 days!)
What led me on my path to become a Traditional Chinese Medical Doctor? It started back in 1994 when I accompanied my mother to see an older gentleman who practiced Chinese medicine. With only checking her pulses and her tongue, I was blown away that he diagnosed her pain and injuries from an accident that stemmed from 5 years prior!! I was already beginning my career in the health care industry as a Medical Assistant/Health Technician, however this man inspired me to pursue my dreams even further to be just like him. When I asked him how, he laughed and said, ¨You must go to China to learn...¨. Broke in paying off a student loan and with a child on the way, I had to put my dream on the backburner but the bug never left! Growing in my career, I became a Registered Nurse (RN), and with a little experience under my belt, I ventured out as a travel nurse to work in different states and see the country. During my travels, I also visited various Acupuncture & Oriental Medical schools. An acupuncturist once told me years later, ¨Look, at least if you go to any of these schools here (U.S.) you´ll get the basics, and can take it from there¨. And so, the search was on to begin pursuing my dream!
Once I had my top three choices, my decision to pursue my dream brought me to Austin, Texas to attend Texas College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, now known as Texas University of Health Sciences. As tough as it was to learn a completely different medical model from the Western-Biomedical view of the body, Chinese Medicine is not just about the individual organs or body systems -it encompasses the entire body as a whole, and its relationship with the world. After graduating in 2018 Summa Cum Laude, I returned to New York. Austin & San Antonio (where I also attended, at the school´s satellite campus) will remain my adopted cities as I have many ties that I hold dear there. By fall 2020, OnPoint Healing Services will work in collaboration with Austin, Dallas & San Antonio practitioners upon receiving the TX Acupuncture license. Currently I hold a New York license in Acupuncture and passed all four exams to become Board Certified in Oriental Medicine [the highest title conferred] by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). I’m working on obtaining additional licenses in Florida, and other states where we can provide services to the neediest of areas where access to affordable healthcare is very limited...My goal is to help those in need, relieve those suffering from serious and long-term diseases and/or pain, give an alternative and holistic approach from regular medical interventions, and most of all, help in times of emergencies in disaster areas whether in the States or overseas.
