Proactivity is an important skill you'll need to succeed as an international student in the U.S.

Why is being proactive is so important to your success?

Being proactive is the opposite of being reactive. It involves taking the time to identify what you need to do to set yourself up for success and planning for any potential roadblocks before you actually hit them. This way, when issues arise, you can have a plan to deal with them, which will significantly lower your stress levels and tell you what you need to do next.

In university or college, this is one of the most important things you’ll learn. Throughout your education you’ll deal with stressful situations related to job hunting, exams, family relationships and much more. It can be extremely difficult to deal with all of these if you don’t have some sort of plan in place.

Make sure you spend time looking ahead to identify potential problems and setting up a plan to deal with them before they come to fruition.

For example, if you look ahead to your exam schedule and you notice you have 2 exams on the same day, plus that’s the week you plan to focus on job hunting, make sure you adjust and optimize your schedule accordingly. If you don’t look ahead and you find out a week prior, it may already be too late, or you’ll need to deal with a mountain of stress which won’t be conducive to positive results you might be looking for.

Over the past 10 years, I’ve helped countless international students like yourself achieve their goals and grow into the professionals they are today. I can help you.

As in-person classes are about to begin and campuses open back up, you may be experiencing anxiety on how to make friends on campus. As an international student, it can be very tempting to just stick with peers from the same country or similar cultural backgrounds. But it is important to branch out and form friendships with your American peers on campus as well. One of the most stressful things when trying to meet new people is where do you meet them and what do you say when you do?

How to Start a Conversation

Finding a way to start a conversation with someone on campus can seem intimidating but having a plan can help you break out of your shell! Here is how I suggest you connect with people around campus and in class to aid you in developing friendships during your time in university and college.

Talking To People in Your Class
The easiest way to strike up a conversation with someone on campus is when you are in class. There is a chance that the person is in the same program as you, shares similar interests, or even has the same class schedule.

Three ways to start a conversation in class:

1. “What does your schedule look like this semester?”

This is a great way to start up a conversation with a fellow student you are sitting next to in class. You will be able to find out if you are in the same program, same year of study, or even organize joining a study group together.

2. “Do you have a group yet for the project?”

Finding people in your class to work on a project with can be stressful but there is a good chance other students in the class are also wondering whom they are going to work with. By striking up a conversation with the person you are sitting next to, you can make a friend and start or join a group for a project!

3. “I missed the example the professor used for______, did you happen to catch it?”

A great conversation starter is to ask the person next to you if they caught a part of the lecture you may have missed or if you didn’t catch an example or date the professor mentioned. You are both there for the same reason, sharing notes and tips can help you form a connection with someone in class!

Get out of your comfort zone and strike up a conversation with someone who may be sitting alone in the class; there is a good chance they are also looking for friends!

A trait that I often see in high-performance talent from Asia is that they would not feel comfortable presenting their work until they have it all figured out - anything less than that often makes them feel inadequate and sometimes ashamed.

In part rooted in how education and feedback are delivered in certain Asian cultures, this “need” to be perfect impacts many Asian talent’s capacity to actively participate in their professional activities in North America and significantly decreases the possibility for them to be seen and recognized in the workplace. Making comments or raising questions in meetings that are not well thought out is often challenging to them. They may need to follow closely the scripts they have prepared during presentations or public speaking in fear of any moments when they appear “not good enough,” “disqualified,” or “imperfect.” With hyperfocus on themselves and constant scrutiny of their own performance, many Asian talent can become “absent” when delivering their work or speech, making it difficult for them to engage their audience and get their messages across.

I help international students understand, navigate, and integrate into their new cultural environment in the U.S., so they can succeed in school, career, and in their social lives. How can I help you?

For some of you who come from a culture that focuses a lot on student grades and rankings, you likely will have to develop new skills in order to succeed in the U.S. college classroom.

While international students easily observe different students’ classroom behaviors between the U.S. and their countries, it usually takes them a while to realize “what got them here won’t get them there.” By the time they had such realization, they may have lost many opportunities to optimize their chances to succeed in the U.S. college classroom.

Here are 5 keys to success in the U.S. college classroom.
