Oats are one of my favorite foods to have for breakfast. They are full of fiber, incredibly filling, and there are so many things to add to it to make them even better!

This morning I cooked 3/4 cup oats with cinnamon and 1 TB ground flaxseed meal in the microwave. Then I topped it with loads of berries and half a banana, and added even more cinnamon.

Super easy and quick, oh so filling, and keeps me full and satisfied for hours!

How do you make your oats?

But wait, where do you get your protein???🤔

I can’t tell you how many times I get this question. Yes, I eat plant based, which means no animal products....no meat, no dairy, and no eggs. And yes, I am easily able to meet my protein needs!💪🏻🥗

Did you know that only 10-15% of your diet needs to be protein? This myth, especially in the fitness world, that you need to eat a high protein diet is based on a study done in the 1800’s...a study that was quickly de-bunked. Crazy, right? 😳😬🤦🏼‍♀️

What we know now, from study after study is that the ideal range for protein is 10-15% of your total calories. That is easily done by eating plenty of plants: whole grains, legumes/beans, tofu/tempeh, vegetables, fruits, and nuts/seeds. By eating a variety of these foods, you can hit your protein goals.

There are a few exceptions, such as if you are over the age of 65, a legit athlete, or doing a lot of heavy weight training in order to build muscle, you will need to bump that number up a bit. This can be done by focusing more on protein rich foods such as tempeh, edamame, beans, and legumes.

But for the average person, protein isn’t something that you need to be spending your time focusing on🙌🏻🙌🏻

And did know that eating a high protein diet where the protein comes from animal products has actually been shown to decrease life span, increase inflammation, and promote disease? ❤️

The moral of the story? Stop stressing about protein. Instead eat a wide array of plants and know you are doing something good for your body with every bite you take!🍎🥑🥦

This holiday season, I’m focusing on eating really well MOST of the time, so when I do choose to treat myself, I fully enjoy it and it doesn't turn into a tailspin.

I’ve had so many clients tell me they are putting their healthy habits “on hold” over the holidays.

And from experience … I can tell you this is one of the fastest ways to feel regretful come January.

For me, instead of taking a break completely, I just change up my goal to something a little different – something attainable...something that will make me feel proud when I follow through.

Why?

I know it’s going to be a busy season, so I’m setting myself up for success. I can still make progress, even throughout the holiday season.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

First and foremost, I make sure I am properly hydrated, whether that is with water or tea (I love me some herbal tea!) Then I load up my plates for every meal with veggies and fruit. I keep my added sugars to a minimal (knowing full well that those holiday treats will be exploding with sugar!) And last but not least, I make sure to get some exercise in every day.

Setting achievable goals that ADD to my day versus make me feel deprived or stressed keeps me positive and happy.

So that’s mine … what’s YOURS? Let me know below!

Feeling like you went a bit overboard this Thanksgiving and now not feeling the greatest? Trust me, you aren't alone.

It's become totally normal to completely GORGE ourselves to the point of feeling awful. And it's not just one day of overeating. It lasts over the entire long weekend.

But with Christmas coming soon, it's important for us to eat as healthfully as possible leading up to it.

But what exactly does that mean??

Here are my top 5 tips for “detoxing” from Thanksgiving and prepping yourself for the upcoming indulgences of Christmas:

1. Drink lots of water. A good rule of thumb is half your weight in ounces, but most people need more. Especially after a big Thanksgiving indulgence!

2. Move your body every day in some way, whether that is a workout class, lifting weights, or just going for a walk.

3. Ditch the dairy. That includes cheese, milk, butter, etc.

4. Replace meat/fish with beans and legumes.

5. Last, but probably the most important: load up on veggies and fruit!!

The more you can eat this way, the quicker you will “detox” from Thanksgiving, and the better you will feel. Your body will thank you for it!

And as you get closer to Christmas, think about how you felt after indulging so much at Thanksgiving. Was it worth the stomach ache, the bloat, the weight gain, etc? Probably not. So be mindful when you choose treats. Make sure you truly enjoy them. If your first bite isn’t amazing, drop the fork (or the cookie). If it is amazing, eat it slowly and truly enjoy every bit of it. Then drink some water and make sure your next meal/snack is a fruit or a veggie!

I don’t believe in completely avoiding treats. But I do think we need to be better about only choosing those treats that we LOVE, and avoiding the rest. And keep them to a minimum so we continue to feel good and treat our bodies well.

Enjoy the holiday goodies in a mindful way. It takes practice, so don’t expect perfection! Load up your plate with plants, drink plenty of water, move your body, and choose the occasional treat that you truly enjoy. Happy Holidays!

xoxo Ajlan

Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I feel so incredibly grateful for the life I have. The life I worked so hard for. The life I visualized and kept believing I could have.
To be able to work from home, helping people with their nutrition and health to prevent chronic disease and feel so much BETTER every day, just fills my heart.
It wasn’t easy, and there have been times when I felt like I was just kidding myself.
But I knew the life I wanted. I knew I wanted a job that brought so much JOY to my life. A job that truly helped people in so many ways. To find a work/life balance that I’m beyond happy with.
I always envisioned a life where I could be present with my kids and my husband. To be able to show down and a joy life. To feel fulfilled.
So if you have a vision for your life and you’re not quite there yet, keep going. Keep fighting for it. And enjoy the ride.
And make sure to eat your fruit and veggies in the process 😜😉🍒🥒🫐🥦🍎
