Speech Sound Development Chart

Have you ever wondered if your little one needs speech therapy for pronunciation?

💥There are many things to consider -

👄Intelligibility in comparison to peers (intelligibility is a child’s ability to be understood by others- primary caregivers may understand more than strangers!)

🦻🏼Age & sounds the child can and cannot say (shown here!)

And - social and academic factors! 🏫 👯‍♀️

Research shows that “Social impact assessments are an important portion of a speech sound evaluation; however, they are often overlooked. The social impact of an SSD includes the child's perceptions, feelings, and attitudes about how others view his or her communication, as well as the perceptions, feelings, and attitudes held by those who interact with the child. These perceptions may limit children's access to typical social interactions in the school setting, which, in turn, may limit the child's participation in the educational setting. Researchers have consistently found that having a communication disorder results in long-term negative academic outcomes (Lewis & Freebairn, 1992; Sices, Taylor, Freebairn, Hansen, & Lewis, 2007) and social interactions (McCormack, Harrison, McLeod, & McAllister, 2011; McCormack, McLeod, McAllister, & Harrison, 2009). Negative academic outcomes and social interactions may lead to a reduction in quality of life through adulthood (Feeney, Desha, Ziviani, & Nicholson, 2012).”

In short, there’s more to assessing a kid’s speech than a graph or a test. If you’re wondering if you should take your child for an evaluation, the answer is probably YES. There’s no harm in having an evaluation and if treatment is needed, you’re already in the right place.

How old is your little one? What sounds is he or she able to say?⤵️

Today in speech we tapped into multiple learning styles by using our looking eyes, listening ears, and pointing fingers to talk about winter animals in the snow!

This is a good one for parents to know- Doctors are super knowledgeable about many things- BUT they did not spend YEARS learning about speech and language like SLPs! Where they say, “let’s wait and see”, we say, “let’s evaluate and see”! Same thing for referring for autism and other developmental conditions assessment! Thanks Anna.Dee.SLP!

Key word: talking WITH your child, not talking to or at your child. It’s alllll about the interactive language!

“Do you know what day is today?
Why, it’s Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!
“The Cat in the Hat”, “The Lorax” and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go”
These stories help children learn as they grow!
From learning letters and reading words
To using rhymes like “birds” and “towards”
His stories are filled with lessons, too!
From being kind to all to trying something new
Dr. Seuss made reading so much fun
For all of us - each and every one!
Don’t forget to pick up a book today
And have your child read every day!”

Happy Leap Day everyone! Kids were having fun at speech today by reading and learning about Leap Year. We also worked on our synonyms and sight word recognition as we were “leaping” and “jumping” around with these fun activities! Hope you are all enjoying this extra day! 🐸

Kids love Paw Patrol! To help increase attention and motivation during the session, a Paw Patrol puzzle was added to this sight word activity. By making this small adjustment, we can work on more skills while having fun! This is a great opportunity to practice following directions, requesting, labeling, yes/no questions, prepositions, and much more!

Jeepers Peepers! A fun way to share laughs and work on speech and language skills while meeting each child's individual needs! This game can be used to work on identifying nouns, adjectives, colors, shapes, sizes, categories, object functions, and many more! To target more complex skills, small modifications can be made. In today's session we worked on drawing conclusions and making inferences. We answered questions on our printed cards before taking a turn in the game.

Sometimes children need a sensory break during therapy. Using Thinking Putty is an interactive way to target goals while children have fun stretching and playing with the putty. We love hiding small objects and having children find them in the putty. While they play, we can identify categories, compare and contrast items, ask "WH" questions, label, follow directions, and engage in turn taking!

Most people think speech therapists ONLY work on speech (“he can’t say R”, “he stutters”), but just as often if not more we work on LANGUAGE skills. And no, that doesn’t mean learning a second language- it’s more about how language develops! Check out one of my favorite graphics to learn the difference in speech and language!

I love using this analogy in speech- especially with new parents or teachers. Sometimes when kids begin speech therapy, immediate progress is expected by the family/educators- but it’s just not realistic to where the child is. It’s important we talk about these prerequisite/foundational skills so all involved know what to expect - and realize that even if you can’t see progress, it doesn’t mean it’s not there! ** I’d also like to add that while eye contact is a foundational skill, I do not force eye contact on anyone and give alternative options!

One of our favorite educational games that children enjoy playing is Monkey Match! Monkey Match is a great way for children to learn about language concepts such as rhyming, colors and shapes, opposites, “what belongs together,'' and letters. Children have so much fun helping the monkey match the pictures while learning at the same time!

🙌🏼 THIS is why it is so important to get a child evaluated early on- and not “wait until they are 3” or older! Acknowledging your child may have a delay is HARD, but it’s more important that we set them up for success! 👍🏼👍🏼 if you agree!

** Please note the numbers here are averages, so it will still be considered typical development for a child to have more or less words - “normal” is a wide range! I would recommend a referral if your 18 month old child has less than 10 words 🙂
