In RLT we empower the relationship. Instead of me vs you, try focusing on us. You can do this by generously listening to your partner while in your wise adult. Honoring and holding them in equal and warm regard.

Time to prep for the holiday season and that means bringing out all those relational tools we have been practicing. Practice this week in moving from complaint to request. Write with me below in ways you practiced making requests this holiday.

As a parent who journeyed through PPMD for years after each child, I can tell you our field can do a better job acknowledging how late it can start and long it can last.

“Favini notes that in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM5), the perinatal mood disorder period is only four weeks after birth. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that postpartum mood disorder can last or start any time up to a year after birth. But Favini says even in later stages some moms feel tremendous guilt when they experience onset later.”

The findings can help both women and doctors better understand how pregnancy impacts mood disorders in the long run.

Talented author, Trish Grisafi, shares her struggle with PTSD and how it shows up as a parent. We are grateful she included Founder, Melissa Kester, for some coping tips. This article is for everyone who is a parent and knows the long lasting pain of trauma.

“Part of healing from trauma and preventing it from becoming intergenerational relies on addressing it, being honest about it and dealing with it in a healthy way, especially when it comes from unexpected places and people who have no idea the distress they’re causing.”

I thought I was alone — and a terrible mom — but it turns out many parents with PTSD struggle with the same reactions.

A Little About Madison MFT

Madison MFT is a small group practice in Midtown, Manhattan. We were formed in 2010, with a desire to offer everyone the opportunity of mental health, sanctuary and freedom. By employing experienced MFT interns and associates, we support our goal to provide affordable and quality care to all who may need it. We welcome all to their sanctuary and the opportunity for the self care they have been seeking.

Since we have 4 different practitioners, we work with a variety of different topics: relationships, perinatal mood disorders, fertility struggles, anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, narcissism, healing from a narcissistic relationship, life’s transitions, etc...
