When you have played the role or caretaker for most of your life, it can be hard to accept love and affection from other people. Maybe you shy away from others who offer things to you. Maybe you reject support because you don’t want to be too much. Maybe you feel like you owe someone after they do something kind for you.

It’s okay to allow people who want to love you, love you. It’s okay to allow yourself to receive warmth and kindness. It’s okay for you to be happy about the good things that happen in your life, even when it means the kindness of others.

Folx with marginalized identities are often left out of the conversation. We’re also often in spaces that weren’t made with us in mind. It leads to paper cuts on our hearts that we don’t notice until we’re exhausted from them. We know it can be painful to think that we live in a world where our identities don’t matters, where privilege is not given to us, and those who have privilege ignore the power it gives them. It’s exhausting…and it’s possible to heal from it.

No one said it’s bad to care about others. However, you don’t have to suffer for everyone’s sake. Sometimes this happens when you’ve grown to be a person who values the role of a caretaker. You love to serve others, and you love to receive praise when you do it well. You need to remember that it’s a necessity to serve yourself and remember your needs. It is not a life requirement to throw your needs away for the sake of other people. You’re allowed to put yourself first in ways that don’t harm you.
