If you’re anything like me, you have personal and professional mini-meltdowns more often than you’d like to admit.

Especially as an entrepreneur, the ebb and flow of business can be paralyzing at times.

For far too long, I believed I didn’t need anyone or anything but myself.

Sadly, too many women executives don’t have the support system they need and want, and it gets lonely and as humans, the more isolated we are, the more our brains can play tricks on us.

We receive messages that we are “needy” or “emotionally weak” if we want connection with others. We are told we can do it all without help and without support…that’s a BIG. FAT. LIE.

We can do amazing things - and we can do amazing things alone. That doesn’t mean wanting connection and community is bad.

We can be fiercely independent AND have the support and connection we need.

When women connect and support one another, we communicate more clearly, we understand ourselves better, we rise together. Community can help us clarify where we want to go and even how to get there.

I am so grateful for the amazing executive women in my life who talk me off the ledge, help me see reality vs the stories I tell myself and who support me no matter what.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Edition 4 of The Executive Woman newsletter, below is an excerpt for you.

This edition I ventured into areas of my life I rarely share outside of my very insular circle…until now.

I share how I lived my life in “neutral” for so long, out of fear, shame and constant worry.

It’s not YOU who is broken, it’s the SYSTEM that is broken. From the time we are little girls we are taught to “be nice” and to “get along”.

We are taught and conditioned to believe that when a little boy or teenage boy is picking on you, even hitting you or shoving you, it’s because “he likes you” and he "just doesn’t know how to express his feelings" and so we are taught to believe we can't set boundaries.

We learn to navigate our world through the lens of lived trauma and diminished credibility which often leads us to accept a path of least resistance…

As an Executive Woman, it is my responsibility to ensure all voices are heard and respected, especially the voices that are historically diminished.

It's long past time we expect Black women to fight this alone, White Women, we have privilege and it's our responsibility to use it and to call out others who fail to deliver the respect everyone deserves.

I recently contributed to a Forbes article and want to share it here, as it's ALWAYS a good time to support and promote women at work!

"8. Enable Every Voice To Be Heard And Respected
Be intentional. One tactic is to ensure you have a plan for every meeting where it is clear everyone is expected to participate and every voice is heard and respected. At any time when respect isn't given, it needs to be addressed immediately. Asking questions like, "What is your intention with that comment?" places responsibility on the aggressor and not the person being treated unfairly." - Barbie Winterbottom, the Business of HR

Be honest ladies, do you still have that favorite pair of Z. Cavaricci or Bongo ankle zip jeans tucked away in the far reaches of your closet hoping they will come back in style or that one day you might be able to lay on your bed, flatten your stomach, grab the metal coat hanger and squeeze yourself back into them, just one more time? No? Just me?

I think we all have that one item or that one cherished idea or memory that we cling to that brings us back to how we felt at a different time in our lives, and while that is completely normal, we also have to realize that what served our needs then, may not be what serves us today and it might be time to reimagine what we need and how we find it.

Check out my latest newsletter, The Executive Woman to read more about how Executive Women continue to struggle with finding the right community and connection...and it's not in those old jeans!

Are you or would you like to nominate an Executive Woman to be a guest on our new podcast? Let me know!

Would you mind doing this Bongo jean loving Executive Woman a favor and share the newsletter with your network?

We are building a community, and we want and need as many of you badass Executive Women to know we are here, and we are doing some great things!

I'd love your comments on how this resonates with you and what you have done to help fill the gap, or if you're still looking.

NEWS FLASH!!

I want all executive women and non executive women in business to hear this LOUD & CLEAR…

There is NO SHAME in being motivated by MONEY! 💵💶💷💴

Throughout history, have been conditioned to believe our purpose on this planet is one dimensional…to serve others.

Our bodies serve others.

Our ideas serve others.

Our emotions serve others.

Our work serves others.

Our generosity serves others.

All of the above CAN be true, IF we choose them to be.

And none of them MUST be true for you to be wholly who you are meant to be.

Wanting to feel purposeful, make a positive impact and be financially rewarded are NOT mutually exclusive.

Expecting to grow your life, career and pursuits wanting to elevate your financial status by “chasing the money” has become a tool of shame and a way to keep us “in our place” (hence the gender pay gap that yes, STILL exists) and I’m here to tell you that’s BS! 🐂💩

It’s time we let go of the shame and get comfortable acknowledging that we are as financially driven as anyone else, and it’s OK!!

1. Set your expectations high because you ARE worth it!

2. Practice negotiating, and learn the skill and tactics of how to get what you deserve. (Hint, embrace the silence)

3. Replace the tapes in your head connecting money to greed, shame and a lack of femininity.

Women control over 30 TRILLION in spending each year, it’s time we start expecting more of that to go into our own bank accounts! (Data on this in the 2nd edition of The Executive Woman newsletter)

The gender pay gap doesn’t exist because it’s illegal and has been for years.

This was the first thing I saw today when logging in…WHAT???

I promptly responded that legal or illegal, it’s still happening.

Murder, theft, fraud are all illegal, yet these happen everyday, why do we think the gender pay gap is any different?

According to a Nov. 2022 report published by Zippia:

“The uncontrolled gender pay gap is 10.25x worse than the controlled gender pay gap.

That’s because the controlled gender pay gap only quantifies the average numbers for all men and women who work in the same job (i.e., have the same qualifications).

On the other hand, the uncontrolled gender pay gap considers the median salary for all men and women in the U.S., regardless of age, job type, etc.

Knowing that, it’s rather shocking to note that by the end of a 40-year career, women in the U.S. make a whopping $900,000 less than men.”

There are still gaps in the controlled study as well, while a smaller gap, women earn 83.1% of what men earn in the same job in 2022. (More on this one later)

The above are US statistics, the gap is larger, much larger in many other countries.

There are many theories as to why the uncontrolled pay gap is so significant-

🤰🏼Women are impacted significantly by pregnancy and time away from work

👩‍👧Women are the primary care givers and thus make sacrifices men aren’t expected to make, often impacting their career journey

👩🏽‍🏫 More women work in lower paying fields than men, like, teaching, secretarial/administrative, child care and jobs paying less than $15/hour

👶🏾 Child care is so expensive, many can’t afford to work and pay for child care due to lower wages paid for work

👷🏽‍♀️The most interesting stat to me is that the gap is lowest in the construction industry

We STILL have a LOT of work to do, let’s not assume because something is illegal, it isn’t still happening.
