This member in particular has struggled with chronic joint pain for > 10 years. They were limited in finding joy in their daily activities because everything was painful.

Don’t forget to join our upcoming event!

We at Reactiv Rehab had much success at our in-person informational sessions for preventing new parenting injuries so we are expanding to virtual informational sessions!

The Preventing New Parenting Injuries event will focus particularly on individuals during pregnancy and new parenthood to learn strategies to reduce joint pain.

Joint pain can affect anyone! At Reactiv Rehab, we focus on helping people with joint pain by connecting you directly to a virtual occupational therapist, providing exercises and modifications to make your daily tasks easier.

Mothers and new parents in particular can suffer from joint pain that affects all joints with conditions like carpal tunnel, sciatica, and mommy’s thumb (DeQuervain’s).

Reactiv is hosting a live event in Brooklyn, NY on April 24th at 9:00am ET! What is an occupational therapist…you may ask? An occupational therapist is a healthcare clinician that helps you do the things you want and need to do. OT intervention uses everyday life and activities to promote health, well-being, and your ability to participate in the important activities in your life.

Reactiv combines these virtual OT sessions with exercising games and exercising videos all to help YOU live with less pain and more independence.

Keep your wrist neutral or straight. It may help to wear a support if you find it hard to keep the wrist neutral.

There are a lot of ergonomic options to help with the positioning of the fingers and wrist.

Support your hands with a brace, support or compression glove during your crocheting time.

Strengthen your hands to help better support those joints and fingers.

Which modification would you try?

Small modifications with our hands can have a big impact over time. Our hands take a lot of force through different activities. By making small changes, you are decreasing the stress through the hand joints!

If you have arthritis, joint pain, or are just noticing some discomfort with these activities, start first by trying a modification.

How can you tell the differences between these different types of pain? 🤔

Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition that affects our joints, particularly as we age. The pain associated with osteoarthritis is usually described as a deep, achy sensation within the affected joint. It may be accompanied by stiffness, making movement challenging, especially after periods of rest.

On the other hand, sprains and tendonitis typically result from sudden injuries or repetitive motions. Tendonitis, inflammation of the tendons, causes pain that is usually described as a dull ache, sometimes accompanied by a burning sensation. Both conditions may lead to stiffness, but it is usually less severe compared to osteoarthritis.

Both conditions can have certain movements aggravate the pain, like pinching and repetitive pinching movements can aggravate both a CMC arthritis (thumb arthritis) and thumb tendonitis, which can make it more challenging to determine on your own.

Did you know these factors for prolonging joint health!

Whether or not you are already experiencing joint pain, have new joint pain, or chronic joint pain…there are things you can do and control to improve the longevity of your joints.

Focus on the factors you can control!
💧Hydration! Water plays a huge role in our joint health, make sure you are making a point to drink water throughout the day
😫Stress. Try finding a few minutes each day to journal, read, get outside, take a walk, or even binging your favorite guilty pleasure show. Whatever it is, reducing overall stress can improve joint health.
🧴Motion is lotion! There are very few instances where movement is going to hurt your joint! (yes, you can overdo it!) In general though, movement helps to improve circulation, improve nutrient transportation, and improve overall joint health
🦿Positioning! The way you do things, especially the tasks you do ALL the time can affect your overall joint health. Find ways to reduce stress through the joints to help over time!

Resting the hands for extended periods of time may initially provide some relief from pain, but it can lead to increased stiffness and reduced function in the long run. The joints in our hands are designed to move, and regular movement helps maintain joint flexibility and prevents stiffness.

Here's why gentle exercises and activities are recommended instead of excessive rest:

🙌🏼Maintaining Joint Mobility: Regular movement helps lubricate the joints and keeps the surrounding muscles and ligaments strong. By performing gentle exercises and activities, you promote blood flow to the affected joints, which can reduce pain and stiffness.

🫶🏻Improving Hand Function: Engaging in activities that require hand movements, such as gripping, grasping, and manipulating objects, helps preserve and improve hand function.

👍🏼Preventing Deconditioning: Prolonged rest can lead to muscle weakness and overall deconditioning. This can further worsen joint pain and decrease hand function. By staying active and incorporating appropriate exercises, you can maintain muscle strength and prevent muscle wasting.

Do you struggle with fatigue with your arthritis? 😩

These are four principles you can use to help guide you through your day.

Some of the principles overlap with each other so you may not be able to fit them all into neat categories but they are meant to be a guide to how to pick what activity to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

These principles can be helpful to plan your day, weeks, and even months so that you can space out your tasks to help save your energy and spoons! 🗓️
