We’d like to introduce Milo, the newest addition to the team! Milo is like a weighted blanket except cuter, and also provides aromatherapy. Many of our clients have felt more calm and comfortable in treatment with him in their lap and their choice of essential oil in his paw pouch.

SCENES FROM THE STAFF FRIDGE ...

Look, TMS works. Wherever you receive it, there's a good chance you'll feel better. Why choose my place over the next guy? My dear former patients say it all. I am truly fortunate to have the kind of staff that makes it so that patients are actually disappointed to finish an 8 week treatment course and say goodbye. They are so committed, so present, so dedicated to making people feel comfortable and seeing them get better. We're like a family here and we'll treat you like family too ♥️

Hello! I have been very absent from social media but very busy in the clinic. Here I am presenting our original research at the annual TMS conference in London 🇬🇧

The research is about how TMS helped (off-label) someone recover from major dysregulation after a bad psilocybin trip. TMS has so much potential to help in so many ways!

I have learned so much at this conference that I am excited to bring back to NYC 🇺🇸

This is definitely something we have seen in practice so it's great to see some published results! Long Covid is an awful thing to be going through and we need to find more solutions quickly. If you are suffering, find out how TMS can help with some of your cognitive symptoms.

One of our pre-treatment questions includes "Any change in caffeine use?" This is how caffeine intake can affect TMS and why we ask this question. Being consistent with your caffeine intake can be beneficial to your treatment course!

Now we know the history of TMS, but how did it evolve into the treatment we know it as today?
-In the 90's, TMS was deemed a safe and effective treatment for depression and was FDA approved to treat depression in 2008.
-In 2010, the APA established it as a mainstream treatment for depression, and three years later, health insurance companies began to cover TMS.
-Currently, nearly all health insurance companies cover TMS, but it can also be administered off-label to treat diagnoses other than depression, including anxiety, autism, smoking cessation, chronic pain, and so forth.

A look into the history of TMS--how did this innovative technology come about?
We can trace its origins to electrophysiology and bioelectric theory, when scientists Galvani and Volta made an unexpected discovery that body tissue is a source of electricity that sends electrical signals throughout the body. From this theory, Michael Faraday introduced electromagnetic induction, which led to research that gentle electrical signals applied to the brain cortex could control bodily functions. In 1985, Anthony Barker pioneered TMS as we know it today. We have many innovative research scientists to thank for this non-invasive, effective and efficient treatment!

✨Staff Spotlight✨

This is Sonia, one of our primary treaters and our social media manager! She has been with us since 2022.

Sonia believes in equitable healthcare and is a massive advocate for mental health awareness. She is of Indo-Caribbean ethnicity, and she proudly represents her culture. However she finds that within her culture, there is a heavy misunderstanding of mental illness, and—consequently—a lack of knowledge about available treatments. Sonia believes equitable healthcare would help break down barriers to accessing proper treatment within her community and other communities of color.

Sonia aims to pursue her PhD in Clinical Psychology, conducting research on innovative but accessible approaches to treatments, while being a representative for the younger generations of Desi/Indi-Caribbean/South Asian people who are also interested in pursuing a career in mental health care.

Her favorite part about working at Dr. Mednick's practice is the welcoming space offered to both patients and technicians. From her first day working here, she admired the way that every technician pays attention to detail, and deeply cares about the well being of each patient. There is a true sense of community at this practice that allows our team to work together seamlessly! 🤍

TMS is a localized procedure, which is great news, because patients never have to worry about other areas of the brain and their functioning being affected in any way. You can trust that the only changes you'll notice are in improvement of symptoms.

SAINT protocol, aka Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy, is an accelerated treatment protocol for depression. It is 9 minutes long, which is half the duration of the standard protocol. It is typically recommended for any patients who wish to complete a standard course of TMS in a shorter duration of time.

We know who qualifies for TMS, but what factors might not make for an ideal candidate? There are very few contraindications to TMS, including:

a) The presence of a medically implanted magnetic-sensitive device located less than or equal to 30 cm from the TMS magnetic coil.

2) The presence of a medical history of seizures, psychosis, and/or any neurological conditions.

Outside of these limitations, anyone can safely receive TMS.

A brief walkthrough of TMS and anxiety--what can you expect?
Though TMS is not yet FDA approved to treat standalone anxiety (only "anxious depression"), several studies show evidence that TMS is an effective treatment for anxiety symptoms.
