ABOUT THE NAME:
Derived from the words aphrodisia - the ancient Grecian festival of love and beauty inspired by the Egyptian goddesses Hathor and Isis - and afro, meaning of African and Diaspora people and culture. Each Afrodisia offering is a rhythmic, celebratory journey inward that inspires self-love, healing, and ancestral-cultural connection through movements originating from African and Aboriginal cultures. ABOUT YOGA:
You might be familiar with Yoga as coming from the Vedic culture of the Indian subcontinent, however archaeological excavations and the science of human migration show that yoga as we know it was first recorded in Egypt near the year 1500 B.C. - at least 1300 years before yoga developed in India through Patanjali. This practice honors the Kemetic (Egyptian) origins of yoga - known as Smai Tawi - as well as the lineages that were developed long afterward. We also honor recent developments in the science of movement in order to maintain safety for all and to encourage practitioners to find ways into each posture that works for their own body’s needs, which is informed by individual progress and ability. We honor each practitioner’s needs while also challenging the notions each one may carry within in order to help uncover the highest self. Yoga is a holistic practice that involves updating one’s lifestyle in addition to the physical asana practice we commonly see as yoga. We honor the totality of yoga, while recognizing that Afrodisia Yoga is an active, physical practice based in asana (postures) that help to clear physical and emotional/mental knots and helps open the path towards a more holistic lifestyle both on and off the mat. Welcome to Afrodisia Yoga, a revolution of authenticity, self-love, ancestral healing, and inner joy.
