The alkaline diet is a dietary approach based on the idea that certain foods can have an impact on the body's pH level. The diet suggests that by consuming more alkaline-forming foods and fewer acid-forming foods, you can maintain a slightly alkaline pH level in the body, which is believed to offer various health benefits.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 considered neutral. A pH level below 7 is acidic, while a pH level above 7 is alkaline (or basic). Proponents of the alkaline diet claim that consuming too many acid-forming foods can lead to an overly acidic environment in the body, which, in turn, may contribute to health issues such as inflammation, weakened immune system, and chronic diseases.
Alkaline-forming foods are typically fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. These foods are considered alkaline due to their mineral content, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. On the other hand, acid-forming foods include meat, dairy products, processed foods, and some grains.
