Located 600 miles off the western coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are of volcanic origin and have never been connected with the mainland. Therefore, for species to have arrived here, they had to have flown, swam, or floated. Most often, larger mammals reside at the top of the food chain, and these animals were not able to make the journey to the islands. Now with a lack of predators in the Galápagos, many of the animals appear tame, never learning to fear humans. Snorkel alongside the Marine Iguana, the only iguana adapted to life in the water. Walk quietly amongst the Islands’ population of Galápagos Giant Tortoise, many of which live more than 150 years! Spot one of the many species of birds including Darwin’s finches, Blue-footed Bo***es, Frigatebirds, Albatrosses, Galápagos Penguins, and Flightless Cormorants.

Byodo-In Temple, Oʻahu, Hawaii

You'd be forgiven for thinking this spectacular temple was located in Japan, but in fact it lies on the island of O'ahu in Hawaii. Known as Byodo-In, the beautiful temple was constructed in 1968 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in Hawaii. A replica of the 1,000-year-old temple of the same name in Uji, Japan, this magnificent building is surrounded by lush landscaping. It's open daily to visitors.

CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PAUL
If you’ve never visited the Cathedral of Saint Paul (a landmark on Saint Paul's skyline since 1915), put it on your to-do list right away. This ornate sanctuary’s exalted ceilings and beautiful rotunda will take your breath away. The Cathedral is open to the public seven days a week and guided tours are offered daily Tuesday through Friday at 1pm (suggested donation of $2).

MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL
Minnesota's State Capitol is one of the Midwest's most spectacular buildings. Constructed in 1905 from white Georgia marble, St. Cloud granite and topped with a majestic statue encased in gold leaf, the building showcases the grandeur of classical style while still functioning with all the modern advances of today’s world. It's not enough just to admire the outside—the building is open Monday through Friday 8am-5pm and free guided tours are offered from 10am-2pm.

LANDMARK CENTER
The Landmark Center serves as a cultural center for various forms of arts such as music, dance, and theater, but it truly is a work of art in and of itself. Located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul, the Landmark’s gorgeous architecture was saved from a wrecking ball in the 1970s, allowing us to appreciate its glory from all the way back in 1902.

Kennecott, Alaska

Shrouded in fog and beguiling fall foliage in the Alaskan wilderness, the Kennicott Mines and surrounding town are (almost) as creepy as Packard Sawmill in Twin Peaks. The town of Kennecott was once flourishing with copper miners and their families until resources were depleted by the late 1930s and all of the townspeople fled—except for a family of three. It was totally abandoned by the 1950s when the family watching over it finally left.

What’s the story behind this old victorian building in downtown?

all the blocks around it were demolished and replaced by modern high rise buildings or parking lots, which puts this building in an awkward position. it’s clearly not abandoned as there are signs out front and the lights were on in the 2nd picture. i’m surprised it hasn’t been sold and tore down yet. hopefully it gets remodeled one day and stays standing.
