Join me in celebrating Autism Awareness Month, which starts today.

Autism is my favorite diagnosis to work with as a clinician. But, for some reason it's hard for me to put into words why that is. I know..speech therapist right? Should be pretty easy for me to communicate my thoughts on a topic 😅

Some thoughts come to mind though, like:
-Watching autistic clients defeat stereotypes and defy expectations that are unfortunately cast upon them in a neurotypical, ableistic world
-Having to try to see the world through a different lense, a different viewpoint, in order to try to relate to and support clients as much as possible
-And being challenged to constantly figure out what those favorite items and favorite interests are so that hopefully, one day, they can communicate them in whatever method possible, no matter how "different" than mine or yours💙

Let's talk teletherapy!

Teletherapy was officially deemed a method of providing speech-language therapy in 2005. But it has really picked up steam the past few years because of many of the reasons I've listed here.

✨ Teletherapy is 100% safe! In today's world, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this helps bring a huge sigh of relief for many people

✨ Teletherapy is so convenient! I mean who doesn't love being able to do their therapy at home, in their pajamas, with their dog on their lap (definitely not talking about myself 😉)

✨It can be extremely fun and motivating for many children! There's a reason people spend so much time watching TV, on their phone, and playing video games. Because it's fun and a lot of kids really enjoy the tech aspect and being able to watch themselves in the camera 😅

✨My favorite as a clinician! It allows for more family involvement and more of a coaching aspect! Making progress in therapy is tremendously dependent on practice and carryover outside the sessions! The more caregivers can see and hear what we're working on and be trained how to help their children, the faster progress will be made!

✨Lastly, research is showing that teletherapy is as effective as in person therapy!

Go give teletherapy a try today! Https://www.courtneyscommunicationstation.com

For a long time as a therapist I kept wondering how to help the kids I was working with when I'd ask them "Do you have a dog?" And they'd answer "Yes!" And a month later mom and dad would tell me that wasn't true. Many times this is a classic example of not understanding the meaning of "yes" and "no". It's very common with children who have language difficulties.

A colleague of mine taught me to ask these kiddos questions about things they could see and it was a game changer! So now, let's say Johnny is wearing a blue shirt and I ask him "is your shirt red?" And he says "yes!" I can show him "No silly! Look it's blue!"

After more and more repetitions the child will understand the context of "yes" and "no" much better 🙃

About me

Hi, I'm Courtney! I'm originally from Upstate, New York and recently relocated to Arizona and let me tell you, I love it! I also love my career. I've known my whole life I wanted to be in a profession geared toward helping others. In undergraduate school I enrolled in a "speech and language intro course" and immediately fell in love with the field of speech-language pathology. I have a true passion for working with children and their families to improve a child's ability to communicate. I have worked in numerous settings including: public and private schools (preschool-high school age), pediatric private practice, and skilled nursing facilities. I look forward to bringing my own life and work experiences into my therapeutic practice to help serve your children.
