We function in a culture that is often focused
on the future and what is coming up. We make predictions, projections and plans of action. It almost seems as though this mindless disregard of the present is encouraged and even rewarded. It can be like swimming up stream at first, but you can very easily change your relationship with the present moment and begin to find the resources, experiences and relationships that you are craving. They are not as far away as you have been conditioned to believe. Notice the aspects of the year, month, week, day and hour that you wish to experience more of and find ways to savor and dwell in them a bit more each time. Perhaps it’s your morning cup of coffee without your phone or the TV on, just the flavor of the sip and the warmth of the mug on your hands. Maybe it’s a hobby or interest that you spend a few more minutes more on each day, shutting your laptop or leaving the office on time to make space. Over time you will develop a natural connection to and awareness of what is available to you in a moment.

What has that inner dialogue in you head been saying lately? We are easily habituated and captivated by our inner dialogue and yet we are rarely given the time and space to determine what exactly that dialogue is saying and why. I imagine that if you were to take a few minutes to jot down the not so pleasant thoughts that repeat you’ll discover breadcrumbs that will lead to growth and healing. Begin to imagine and write down what you’d be doing in your life if the reality you lived in was more your speed. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish!

Eagerly if not obsessively thinking about when you’ll arrive at your desired outcome in life? Take a moment to recall when you were young and on say a car drive or waiting for something to happen in the day. Minutes felt like hours and hours felt like days. “Are we there yet?” comes to mind as I remember those drives to the beach growing up. The more you pay attention to where you’re not at the longer time feels. Why not notice all of what is going on in your life and around you? Who are the people that do show up for you? What are the activities you can enjoy? Begin to notice in small steps all of the opportunity right in front of you and begin to perhaps consider allowing your focus to pay attention to what’s available now.

Are you wanting to create something different in your life compared to what you are experiencing now? Perhaps it’s around your health, career or overall satisfaction with life. The first step is the smallest step in a direction that your mind does recognize. There are those thoughts that turning right instead of left and doing this instead of that will somehow shift the delicate balance of that aspect of your life that you don’t even want. It makes no sense to stay the same yet we do it anyway. Take a deep breath, loosen your jaw, remind yourself that you can stay safe and try something in a new way. Through repetition of taking those small new steps you’ll require your brain and nervous system. What does it give you to know that it’s that simple?

What are you noticing now that you were not seeing before? It’s easy to have tunnel vision and often that is when we begin to feel anxious, disempowered or overwhelmed. We get stuck in trances or mindsets that negate important Informarion, options and opportunities. Trance is simply the emotional state that you are in at a given moment. It is your mindset, feelings and automatic behaviors all in one. What you pay attention to fosters the trance that you are in. Are you paying attention to what is bringing you joy and productivity or sadness and confusion? You have agency and control over the emotional state your in by paying attention to where you focus. Is what you are paying attention to working for you? If yes, keep going and if not take a moment to be mindful and to shift your focus to what feels good to embody. Each time you shift your focus to something that works better for you you require your brain to do this automatically more often down the road.
