Yiska Obadia Services & Comforting Touch for Birth

Yiska Obadia Services & Comforting Touch for Birth Comforting Touch for Birth shows you how to approach people in labor with confidence. Other services include acupuncture, massage and a variety of classes.

Hello! I’m Yiska. I’ve been a massage therapist since 1995, a birth doula since 2001 and an acupuncturist since 2007. Along the way I’ve worked with hundreds of pregnant women and their partners to find comfort during pregnancy and labor. Yes, you read that right, hundreds! And that experience has shown me exactly what kind of touch women in labor do -- and do not -- want. Over the past few years, I’ve been teaching in-person workshops for doulas and parents-to-be, showing them simple yet wonderful ways they can provide comfort and support to a woman throughout the childbirth experience. Many of my students and clients have been asking me to write a guidebook they can use as a reference (and share with friends)... and so here it is: Comforting Touch for Birth. If you are a doula, childbirth educator, or parent-to be looking for a high-quality resource about comforting touch, look no further! If you want to know how to touch your partner or clients during labor in a way that is comforting and satisfying, Comforting Touch for Birth will guide you. This guidebook is a 70+ page download with illustrations and 10 videos teaching you what you need to know to provide the kind of touch women in labor want so she can feel safe, relaxed and held throughout. This is the truth, and certainly as a birthworker.

I cannot be a “safe space” for you. No one can. Being alive will always hold risk. And the attempt to avoid risk is only a reality of control, which I am not here to offer. What I can offer you is SUPPORTED SPACE, with all my heart and soul, and be there for you with whatever happens.

In preparation for the launch of our Wisdom of Birth Deck, which IS happening in 2026, I’ve been dedicating myself to learning more about the Tarot and how to better understand the universal wisdom offered by the cards.

In this process, I’ve learned that each year corresponds with a different card in the Major Arcana, based on the numerology of the year.

Scroll all the way through for the insights that came through with wisdom that applies to both birth and life.

When you think of “Comforting Touch”, what kind of touch comes to mind? When asking myself this question, I realized that actually there are at least 5 different categories of Comforting Touch, each with distinct attributes that are supportive or “comforting” in their own way, depending on the situation, especially when it comes to birth.

These are the 5 types of Comforting Touch I came up with: Massaging Touch, Counter-Pressure, Soothing Strokes, Rhythmic Touch, and Holding.

Do you have a favorite? I love them ALL, but if I HAD to pick, I’d go with a well timed and placed massaging touch!

I don’t even know why it’s so amazing to me that we’re biologically designed to be sensitive to the soothing touch of our caregivers.

I mean duh, and of course!

But it’s still awesome to me that there are unique sensory receptors that are specifically attuned to being lullabied by this certain kind of soothing touch.

As birthworkers and partners, why wouldn’t we want to capitalize on this built in mechanism during labor?!

Strong counter-pressure during labor, especially hip squeezes, are so helpful because…

✨ It distracts our attention and sensory receptors away from the sensation of contractions.

✨ It helps open our hips, making room in the pelvis that literally decreases internal pressure.

✨ And it generates a strong experience of being grounded and supported by being held in a such a secure, steady, and anchoring type of touch.

✨ That feeling increases oxytocin production and reduces stress hormones, which only supports the birth process.

The power of Comforting Touch is real. Would you agree? To learn more with me, explore the links in my bio!

We’re often told to let go of what we think we know. Which is also a great way to approach life and learning.

Open-minded, as a beginner.

Consider though how equally valuable it is to let go of what we think we DON’T know.

This is my approach in teaching Comforting Touch for Doulas.

So commonly, people finish or get a few months out of doula training and feel like an imposter, like you know nothing, so nervous about touching your people.

There is so much (too much) we diminish about ourselves in our newness as doulas that makes us feel inadequate.

But we’re forgetting how much we already know even as . In our bones, in our own skin, in our intuitive capacity.

Come to class to hone this intuition and claim your confidence. To remember and claim what you actually know, so you can feel confident offering your current and future doula clients the deeply supportive power of your touch.

PS. Class is not only for new doulas, all experience levels are welcome (whether you’ve attended 0 or 1000 births)!
