Today is the first day of pride month so let's get into why this is important. It is important for everyone to accept themselves and pride encourages this for people who have been shunned for who they are and are still often shunned today. Not everyone may be q***r but everyone can understand what it feels like to not be accepted by others.

So what happens when others criticize or do not acknowledge a part of our identity?

-You might start to question who you are
-You might learn to hate yourself
-You may hide who you are from others
- You can get confused between what you think and want and what others expect from you
- You can learn to not trust others

These are just general examples of struggles but will have more layers and ramifications. If you do feel you relate to any of this then speaking to a therapist can help.

Following the theme of the last post, lets now get into how attachment styles effect us. If you had a parent that was not always available when you were growing up, you may get an anxious attachment style which means you will be anxious when you're not around people, fear that they will abandon you, and worry about how what you're doing will push people away.

An avoidant attachment style can make you push others away from you when you feel them getting close with you. You may struggle to know how you feel about things in general and may feel uninterested in relationships. You may also isolate yourself when upset.

A disorganized attachment style gives you characteristics of both and is usually caused by trauma.

The attachment style you want is a secure one. The good news is you can get a healthier attachment style by being in a healthy relationships and not letting uncomfortable feelings prevent that. A therapeutic relationship with a therapist is one healthy relationship that you can grow from. Therapy can also give you insight on how these styles effect you and where they come from. A lot of my work is focused on how these early relationships with our parents effect us.

The first thing that influences our relationship with others is our relationship with our parents. We form our attachment styles from how our parents tended to us as infants and children.

If we had a parent who dismissed our needs when we sought comfort then we would learn to have an avoidant style. If we had parents that were smothering or unpredictable when we sought comfort then we would have an anxious attachment style. Parents who met our needs would give us a secure style. Happy Mother's day! Did you know our mothers or any parent have big impacts on us from birth that can influence us for the rest of our lives? When we are born we see the world through our relationships with our parents. This perception stays with us our whole life unless something causes it to change. It affects our relationships and how we feel in general. A way to explain this is with attachment styles.

When you celebrate with mom today, think about what you learned from her and the similarities you may have. The next few posts will be about attachment styles- what they are and how to cope with ones that effect you negatively.
