What I’m reading now: Know My Name, by Chanel Miller ✨
Many of you may remember the harrowing and shocking Stanford r**e case, in which a young woman was passed out in the back of a frat house. Two joggers stopped a s*xual assault that was in progress. During the trial we saw a patriarchal system at work– the wealthy young man was a top athlete. The male judge opined how tragic it would be to have his potential cut short. The unnamed woman was vilified and shamed for her actions.
History repeats itself as we are again seeing the Epstein files in the news with its lists of rich and powerful men who have used and abused countless young, nameless women without a second thought or concern for their well being.
As a therapist, I see every day how trauma—in all its forms—forces us to shut down our voice and fills us with doubt and shame. We learn to suppress the capacity for pleasure as a means of self-protection.
Thank you, Chanel Miller, for your courage to reclaim your narrative and share your story of trauma, grief, and self-discovery. Your work is a powerful, necessary blueprint for surviving and finding one’s truth.
